Did your infant suffer from serious complications like bone fractures or rickets after taking Neocate infant formula? You may be able to file a Neocate formula lawsuit.
Neocate baby formula is a hypoallergenic formula option developed for babies who are unable to handle the ingredients of more traditional baby formulas, such as soy or dairy milk. Neocate is what is known as an elemental formula, meaning it has been broken down into amino acids to avoid potential allergic reactions or other intolerances.
Neocate is manufactured by Nutricia North America. Nutricia advertises its Neocate formula as containing all the necessary nutrition for children allergic to traditional formula. Marketing refers to the formula as “hypoallergenic and nutritionally complete,” and having the “same nutrition of a regular baby/toddler formula,” as well as “supports normal growth and development.”
Neocate formulas include Syneo Infant, Infant DHA/ARA, Nutra, Junior, Junior with Probiotics, and Splash.
Unfortunately, Neocate formula has been linked to some serious complications, some of which could give parents grounds for a Neocate formula lawsuit.
Neocate Formula Complications
Side effects that have recently been associated with Neocate baby formula include the following, which may be severe or long-lasting:
- Broken bones
- Rickets
- Skeletal deformities
- Stunted growth
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphatemia)
- Long-term skeletal damage
A Neocate study conducted by researchers at Yale University and the Mayo Clinic was published in 2017 in the journal Bone. Researchers studied a group of dozens of children across North America and Ireland taking Neocate formula, and showed a connection between the intake of Neocate and low blood phosphate levels, or hypophosphatemia, which can cause low bone density. This may eventually lead to far worse complications, from rickets to skeletal deformities, stunted growth, or even broken bones.
The study found that 94 percent of these children were found to suffer from either Neocate rickets, low phosphate levels, or broken bones. Rickets is a condition that involves the softening of bones. Unfortunately, skeletal damage caused by rickets may be permanent.
Researchers strongly recommended careful monitoring of children taking Neocate to avoid nutritional deficiencies and the bone conditions that can result from them.
Filing a Neocate Formula Lawsuit
Nutricia officials learned of Neocate complications like rickets and broken bones between 2016 and 2018. In response, the company brought in a panel of experts to investigated and ended up developing new Neocate products that would fix the low phosphate levels. However, consumers claim, Nutricia failed to warn consumers about the risks, and continued to make the claim that Neocate products were “nutritionally complete” even while investigating the products.
If your child has suffered from side effects like rickets, broken bones, or others after taking Neocate, you may be able to file a Neocate formula lawsuit. While filing a Neocate formula lawsuit cannot undo the pain and suffering caused to your child by Neocate complications, it can at least help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses and lost wages. Consulting an attorney familiar with Neocate cases can help.
