According to recent studies, Neocate ingredients are linked to increased risks for rickets and bone fractures.
Neocate provides an anti-allergenic alternative formula for children who are allergic to cow’s milk or have a soy allergy. The brand is one of the most popular, providing parents with alternative formulas for their children.
Overview: Neocate Ingredients
Neocate ingredients are specifically made for children with a variety of food allergies, cow milk allergy, or other conditions. Neocate ingredients are soy oil free, dairy free, and composed of a formula that is amino-acid-based.
However, several serious injuries have been, unfortunately, linked to Neocate ingredients, including risks for fractures and rickets. A study published in Bone, a scientific journal, has recently found a link between Neocate and a condition of low phosphate levels in the blood, called hypophosphatemia.
The study looked into 17 institutions and 51 children who developed hypophosphatemia and were only given the amino-acid based formula. While evaluating the children for fractures and rickets, the physicians discovered that the children had a deficiency in vitamin-D that is linked to bone deformity.
According to the researchers of the study, they wrote that the results “indicated a deficient dietary supply or severe malabsorption of phosphate, despite adequate formula composition. When transition to an alternate formula was possible, biochemical status improved shortly after introduction to the alternate formula, with eventual improvement in skeletal abnormalities.”
In almost 94 percent of cases involving children who had only been fed Neocate, the researchers found evidences of undermineralization, rickets, or fractures. Only when the children were given a different formula or given supplemental phosphate did their conditions improve.
Parents are advised that if they are feeding their children with Neocate, that they should watch out for nutritional deficiencies that can cause bone issues among other injuries.
At least one parent has been accused of child abuse because of their child’s unexplained fractures. After seeing a Neocate commercial, however, in one case, it was then that the parent was able to explain his child’s fractures as possible effects of Neocate ingredients. It was the case of a Mississippi father that was investigated for child abuse after his 10-year-old son developed multiple unexplained fractures.
His son, who had cerebral palsy, used a feeding tube and was in a wheelchair. After his father saw his son holding his wrist in a specific manner, he took him to his physician who was able to diagnose the child with a fracture.
Months later, the physician also diagnosed another fracture in the boy, and that was when the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services began to investigate the situation.
Being accused of child abuse, the boy’s father hired an attorney. The man was soon able to explain his son’s fractures as a possible effect of Neocate, instead of child abuse. He was able to do so after seeing a Neocate commercial denoting the link between fractures and the Neocate formula. It took approximately five months for the boy to wean off Neocate while spending that time in the hospital.
Parents who are feeding their children Neocate are advised to pay attention to potential adverse side effects linked to Neocate ingredients, such as bone fractures and bone deformity.
