Daughter Seeks Asbestos Wrongful Death Damages from Texaco

By Mike Holter

Mesothelioma asbestos
The daughter of a Texaco worker who died of lung cancer last year has filed an asbestos lawsuit against the oil company, alleging it negligently exposed her father to asbestos, which directly contributed to his cancer diagnosis.

On July 17, 2012, Plaintiff Julie Verret filed an asbestos lawsuit against Texaco alleging that her father, John Verret, died of lung cancer on July 27, 2011. Mr. Verret worked at a Texaco facility in Port Arthur, Texas as a bricklayer and operator from 1968 to 1992. During his employment, Verret was exposed to asbestos dust and fibers, leading him to contract asbestos lung cancer, the lawsuit claims. His daughter is seeking wrongful death damages from Texaco for negligently exposing him to asbestos.

John Verret is one of thousands of people who have died from asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer, Mesothelioma, asbestosis, and more. Many of these people worked for companies that negligently exposed them to asbestos-containing products. The time between exposure to asbestos and the appearance of asbestos cancer symptoms can be as long as 20 to 50 years, forcing the families of many of these victims to carry on the legal battle after their loved one dies. Workers who may be at risk for asbestos exposure include, but are not limited to, pipe fitters, car mechanics, construction workers, boiler and furnace technicians, navy shipyard workers, miners and railway workers.

Asbestos cancer doesn’t just affect people who work with the toxic substance, though — secondary asbestos exposure has recently been recognized as a contributing factor in asbestos cancer diagnoses in family members of asbestos workers. This is caused by the worker bringing home asbestos fibers on his or her clothing. Anyone who comes in contact with these fibers is put at risk for developing asbestos cancer. Secondhand asbestos exposure lawsuits are rare, but have been filed against employers, asbestos manufacturers and other defendants.

If you or a loved one suffered an asbestos related disease such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer, asbestosis warts, pleural plaques, diffuse pleural thickening or pneumothorax, you may have a claim to pursue compensation from the companies responsible for the asbestos exposure.
