Chantix Lawsuit Details Dangerous Chantix Side Effects Statistics

By Matt O’Donnell

Chantix side effectsMore than 40 people from across the country filed a joint lawsuit against Pfizer, Inc. and its California distributor, McKesson Corp., alleging they suffered severe side effects from taking the smoking cessation drug Chantix. The Chantix lawsuit alleges the drugmaker did not properly test the medication and intentionally ignored statistics that Chantix causes depression, aggression, suicidal tendencies and other psychiatric disorders, as well as heart problems in users. The lawsuit was recently transferred to multidistrict (MDL) litigation pending in the Northern District of Alabama, where it joins more than 2,400 other Chantix lawsuits seeking compensation for severe Chantix side effects.

Shortly after Chantix was released in 2006, a European Medical Agency report found that Chantix, also known as varenicline, increases the risk of “serious adverse reactions” six times more than the competing smoking cessation drug Zyban (bupropion). According to the Chantix lawsuit, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced varenicline accounted for 988 serious injuries in the U.S., “more than any other individual drug in this time period” in the fourth quarter of 2007. “By comparison, the FDA received a median of five reports of serious injury for 769 different drugs in the fourth quarter. Only 35 drugs accounted for 100 or more reports,” the Chantix lawsuit says.

Plaintiffs in the Chantix lawsuit (entitled Frazier v. Pfizer) go on to allege that Pfizer officials kept denying a link between Chantix and suicide, despite admitting to Congress that the company received 322 reports of Chantix suicidal thoughts, 37 suicide attempts, and 16 Chantix suicides prior to November 20, 2007. The number of Chantix suicides jumped to 98 by July 2009, the lawsuit says, as well as more than 4,750 serious Chantix-related psychiatric events and 188 Chantix attempted suicides reported to the FDA in July 2009.

Plaintiffs in the Chantix lawsuit also allege that a yearlong Chantix side effects study demonstrated that 20 out of 251 Chantix users experienced “psychiatric disorders” while only 3 of the 126 patients taking placebos experienced similar problems.

“The relative risk that Chantix patients would suffer psychiatric disorders was more than threefold that of patients on placebo, a relative risk that was significant both clinically and statistically,” the Chantix lawsuit alleges.

The Plaintiffs, along with thousands of other Plaintiffs involved in Chantix lawsuit MDL, allege that the drug was defectively formulated, and that Pfizer is to blame for failing to warn users about the serious risks of Chantix side effects.

Lawsuits Claim Serious Chantix Side Effects

Plaintiffs involved in the Chantix lawsuit MDL want Pfizer to be held liable for injuries caused by Chantix. Common Chantix side effects cited in lawsuits include:

* Depression
* Suicidal thoughts
* Attempted suicide
* Behavioral changes
* Heart attack
* Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
* Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
* Cardiovascular problems

* Severe physical injury after sudden or unexplained abnormal behavior

If you are experiencing any of these serious Chantix side effects, you should see a doctor immediately for treatment. If you are experiencing these symptoms, or experienced some or all of these symptoms in the past, you should also speak with a Chantix lawsuit specialist to see if you are a good fit to file a Chantix class action lawsuit or an individual Chantix lawsuit. Family members who lost a loved one due to Chantix suicide or Chantix heart attack may opt to file a wrongful death lawsuit. Filing a Chantix class action lawsuit may not be your best course of action, so it’s important to speak with a Chantix compensation consultant to see if you may be able to claim compensation due to any injuries associated with Chantix side effects.

    I took Chantix back in 2015 and had such vivid nightmares I have symptoms of PTSD whenever I look at the moon. As a veteran who already suffers from PTSD I would never had taken this drug prescribed by the VA if I knew the nightmares would be so vivid it would cause more PTSD triggers.

    I was prescribed chantix on 7/30 2021 I took it for about 3 week s and noticed that I was having flashes in my vision and dark circles and my hearing sounded muffled I went to the eye doctor he said there was nothing wrong with my eyes and the only thing that had changed was My doctor had prescribed me chantix. I called his office told him what was going on and he told me to immediately stop taking it. My blood pressure has also been elevated.

  6. Kimberly says:

    I took the drug years ago and had suicide idealations, I was taken off. Recently 7/30/2020 I was in a better head space and did quit smoking and is a year now. However. I was hospitalized for septic. Stomach ulcers. PAD and gluclose levels sky high. When I stopped I felt much better. But still having artery issues dated from years ago which makes me believe that would be the first time I took this stuff.

  7. joyce monroe says:

    I have chronic diahreah since taking Chantix. I’ve been contacted by my pharmacy that I had taken the Chantix lots that have been recalled. I have been off of Chantix since January 28th 2021.

  8. Robert Ireland says:

    I am an 82 old male who has taken Chantix off and on for 3 or 4 years, or maybe more. I would quit and then fall back into smoking. I would get a script for Chantix and quit again. I am on a self administered reduction of the Chantix so when I quit the Chantix I should not crave. Thiis medication is a blessing for me as I want a 3-pack a day smoker 5 or 10 years ago. Today I do not smoke and will continue reducing Chantix until I no longer need it.

  9. Carlton C Adams says:

    After taking CHANTIX I developed Peripheral Artery Disease and since have undergone several angioplasty procedures as well as several TIA’s and 3 CVA’s in 2018 I had an emergency double bypass to restore my ability to walk. At first, my Dr. Diagnosed me as having “GOUT”, however, he came to realize that I did not have the lifestyle or fit any of the normal criteria for someone who would normally develop “Gout”, he subsequently consulted with a phenomenal vascular surgeon and professor of Vascular Surgery at the Columbia University School of Medicine who demanded that I stop taking “Chantix” Immediately and also get in to see him for emergency stent placements in both my right and left legs. I was also told that I was close to sudden death. My arteries were so narrowed at that point I had lost the ability to walk and already had several strokes (CVA’S) and mini-strokes (TIA’s) because I was getting enough blood to my brain. In September 2018 he performed an emergency double bypass and spent 2 months hospitalized. I had only taken Chantix for about two weeks before I began to notice changes in my claudication, as well as several instances of Myocardial Infarction (MI), scares and if it wasn’t for keeping asprin always available in my home, I would not be here to share my story.
