CBS Doctor Agrees Zithromax Can be Fatal for Some Users
By Jessica Tyner
Dr. Max Gomez, a physician that contributes to CBS news reporting, has agreed that using Zithromax can sometimes lead to fatal consequences. When the FDA released the warning that linked Z-Pak to fatal heart issues, many people got worried — and for good reason. As one of the most popular antibiotics on the market, Zithromax is commonly prescribed for minor infections, even in children. However, according to Dr. Gomez, taking the drug puts patients at a very increased risk of heart complications.
Dr. Susan Steinbaum at Lenox Hill Hospital echoes Dr. Gomez’s concerns. The active ingredient in Zithromax is azithromycin, and it works by altering the electric conduction in the heart. “Messing” with the heart can be a dangerous game of Russian roulette, and there’s no telling when the altered conduction might lead to fatal Zithromax side effects like cardiac arrest or sudden heart failure.
CBS Makeup Artist is Another Z-Pak Victim
CBS really dug into the story when one of their own employees became a Zithromax heart side effect victim. Fortunately, makeup artist Tenaj Perry survived, but others aren’t so lucky. When she came down with bronchitis, doctors prescribed Z-Pak because — unlike other antibiotics — patients only have to take it for five days compared to nine. Perry knew something was wrong when, just two days after starting the drug, she was sitting down and suddenly her heart began racing.
Perry had heart arrhythmia, and Zithromax is especially dangerous for people with underlying heart issues. However, many patients aren’t asked about these details when getting a prescription for a minor infection. When Perry stopped taking Z-Pak, the symptoms faded away but it might not have been so simple for a different Zithromax victim. According to the FDA, physicians need to be aware of the high risks, especially for those with existing heart complications.
Pfizer’s Z-Pak Defense
The maker of Zithromax, Pfizer, claims that other antibiotics might have similar side effects. This may or may not be true, but the research all points to Z-Pak as being the key antibiotic to cause these dangerous heart side effects. According to Pfizer, the labels already warn about heart complications but that hasn’t been enough to put a stop to the number of victims continuing to report heart complications.
According to those filing Zithromax class action lawsuits against Pfizer, more warnings are necessary.
People trust that their doctor has prescribed a safe antibiotic for their ailments. Critics say that antibiotics in general are overprescribed, and that might lead to an increased risk of Z-Pak victims, too.
You Might be a Zithromax Victim
Since Z-Pak is so popular, there’s a good chance you or someone you love has been prescribed the medication. If you suffered heart-related complications around the time you took Zithromax, you might have a Z-Pak legal claim. Compensation may be available via a class action lawsuit settlement.
