Studies have linked erectile dysfunction drug Viagra with an increased risk of developing melanoma cancer, a rare and dangerous type of skin cancer.According to research, popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra may be linked to an increased risk of melanoma cancer.

Viagra is the brand name for sildenafil, a drug that may affect the body’s ability to fight melanoma cancer. According to some research, a signaling pathway in melanoma cells may be affected by Viagra, resulting in the development of skin tumors.

A 2014 study of 15,000 U.S. men indicated that the use of Viagra may result in a higher risk of developing malignant melanoma cancer. According to this study, men who took Viagra were at a significantly increased risk of developing the skin cancer.

Another study of 24,000 Swedish men from 2015 also found a link between Viagra and cancer. These studies indicate that men who take Viagra may be up to 84 percent more likely to develop melanoma than men who do not take the drug. While this link has not yet been extensively studied, men who have been prescribed Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction may want to understand the signs and symptoms of this dangerous condition.

What is Melanoma Cancer?

Melanoma is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer. It occurs when skin cells begin to multiply very quickly, forming tumors that often look like moles. These moles are generally brown or black, but may also be pink, red, purple, blue, white, or skin-tone.

Although melanoma is rare and only accounts for around 2 percent of cases of skin cancer, it is responsible for the majority of deaths caused by skin cancer. Approximately 76,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year, with about 9,700 people dying from the condition.

What are the Symptoms of Melanoma Cancer?

Melanoma cancer may develop anywhere on the body. The cancer often develops on areas that have significant sun exposure, including the back, legs, arms, and face, but it may also develop in hidden areas including the palms, soles of the feet, and fingernail beds.

Initial symptoms of melanoma cancer often include:

  • Changes to existing moles
  • Development of new moles, pigmented spots, or growths on the skin
  • Redness or swelling surrounding moles
  • Skin sores that don’t heal on their own
  • Changes in mole texture

Unusual moles, that may be a warning sign of melanoma, may have irregular shapes or borders, change colors, grow larger than ¼ inch in diameter, or have changed color, shape, or size over time. Moles that are an indication of melanoma cancer may also cause itching or bleeding.

Victims who have been diagnosed with melanoma cancer after taking Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs may be eligible to hire a qualified attorney and file a class action lawsuit against the drug manufacturer. Victims who file lawsuits regarding Viagra and melanoma cancer may be able to recover compensation for their injuries, pain and suffering, and medical expenses.

Can Melanoma Be Treated?

The sooner that a diagnosis is given, the easier it is for the patient to determine what courses of treatment they might be eligible to receive for melanoma. The treatment options also depend on how advanced the condition is at that point in time. If the person is in the early stages of melanoma, doctors might believe there are more treatment opportunities.

Some of the most common treatment options for melanoma include surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy medications, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Some or only one of these might be recommended in your case based on the doctor’s evaluation of your situation. Your treatment types will vary based on the stage of the cancer.

Stage 0 melanoma, for example, refers to cases in which the cancer has not extended below the top layer of the skin. The most common treatment option here is to carry out surgery that removes that section of the skin with the goal of minimizing the cancer’s spread to other parts of the body.

On the other end of the spectrum, the most serious stage of melanoma is stage IV. This means that the cancer has spread well beyond its starting point and has now gone to the lymph nodes in the body. Radiation therapy or surgery could be recommended for the removal of a tumor in the body.

Many targeted drugs have been developed in recent decades that make it easier to explore other treatment options outside of chemotherapy, which is known for having many side effects.

If you or a loved one were diagnosed with melanoma after using Viagra, Cialis or Levitra, you may have a legal claim. Personal injury lawyers are helping victims and their families pursue compensation for their injuries. If you have a case, you could be able to recover your medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
