The FDA is warning that breast implants, especially textured implants, may be connected to anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

Reportedly, people with breast implants have an increased risk of developing ALCL in the scar capsule adjacent to the implant.

The FDA also stresses that people with textured rather than smooth implants are at an even higher risk of developing ALCL.

According to the FDA, breast implant associated – anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is not a cancer of the breast tissue.

The FDA states that when breast implants are inserted into the body, they are placed behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle, and over time, a fibrous scar called a capsule forms around the implant. This capsule scar tissue then separates the implant from the rest of the breast.

According to medical research, the anaplastic large cell lymphoma can then develop in the scar capsule that forms around the implant. Reportedly, cancer is generally found adjacent to the implant capsule itself and contained within the fibrous capsule.

Research suggests that people with textured implants are at a higher risk of developing the breast implant associated – anaplastic large cell lymphoma than those with smooth breast implants.

This issue has made news headlines, and is raising concerns in other countries. Canada’s health regulator has stated that it is notifying one breast implant maker, Allergan, that it “intends to suspend the licenses for Biocell breast implants as a precautionary measure.”

In a Canadian review of breast implants and ALCL, reportedly there were 28 confirmed cases of BIA – ALCL, and 24 of those were linked to Allergan’s Biocell breast implant.

One member of the FDA panel even called for banning the textured implants linked to cancer. However, the committee reportedly “did not recommend that any implants be taken off the market,” according to NBC News.

ABC News notes that textured implants are more popular in some countries than others, so people in some parts of the world may be at a higher risk of developing BIA – ALCL. ABC News in Australia notes that textured implants are more popular in Australia, so Australian patients may be at a higher risk for developing the lyphoma.

Now, Australian regulators are discussing whether or not to take textured implants off the market, according to ABC. Additionally, ABC notes that a group of Australian women who were given Allergan implants after their mastectomies are considering a class action lawsuit against the company over the issue.

For its part, France has taken more drastic steps to address the issue of BIA – ALCL, according to AZ Family. AZ Family notes that BIA – ALCL has been linked to 19 deaths worldwide, and the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products has moved to ban a small subset of textured breast implants.

Canada has banned only one textured breast implant.

The FDA is reportedly taking note of the choices of other health agencies around the world and is now taking steps to better understand the issue.
