Monsanto Lawsuits and Settlements
The newest lawsuit citing Roundup-related cancers comes on the heels of an $80 million verdict against Monsanto. In March 2019, a jury found the agricultural corporation had failed in its duty to warn consumers about the possible dangers associated with its weed-killing product.
More trials are scheduled on the heels of that verdict. In the next case to go to trial, plaintiffs Alva and Alberta P., both in their 70s, claim that they began to use Roundup to kill weeds on their multiple properties almost 40 years ago. The couple estimates that they sprayed approximately 1,500 gallons of Roundup before stopping in 2017, after Alva saw a television commercial claiming that the product may cause cancer. Prior to this, Alva and Alberta claim that they had no idea that glyphosate exposure could be dangerous.
In 2011, Alva was diagnosed with an aggressive form of large B-cell lymphoma. Alberta was diagnosed with the same cancer in 2015. The couple claims that intensive cancer treatments and chemotherapy have left them with long term side effects, medical expenses, brain fog, and difficulty with walking and speech.
Due to the rarity of the type of cancer they both have, Alva and Alberta’s doctor believes that the disease may have been caused by something in their environment. Alva and Alberta believe that their decades of glyphosate exposure from spraying Roundup is the cause.
According to Alva and Alberta’s lawyer, there is evidence that Monsanto scientists falsified academic papers claiming that Roundup was a safe product. Additionally, their lawsuit claims that Monsanto ignored research suggesting that glyphosate exposure was dangerous, and refused to conduct further research into the chemical’s safety.
What is Roundup?
Roundup is a type of spray weedkiller manufactured by Bayer-owned Monsanto. It was introduced to the market in 1973 and has remained a staple product for groundskeepers and hobby gardeners.
The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in the United States. Despite years of belief that glyphosate is a safe product, thousands of lawsuits recently filed against Monsanto claim that the chemical is dangerous and carcinogenic.
Who is at Risk?
Due to Roundup’s popularity, it is likely that hundreds of thousands of people have been exposed to the dangerous chemical. Landscapers, groundskeepers, and home gardeners may all be at risk for glyphosate exposure. If you have used Roundup and been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, you may benefit from participating in a free glyphosate cancer investigation and pursue compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, and more.
Alva and Alberta’s Glyphosate Lawsuit is Case No. RG17862702, in the Superior Court of the state of California, County of Alameda.
If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Roundup as a farm worker or home gardener, you may have a legal claim. Legal migrant farm workers may also seek help. Learn more by filling out the form on this page for a FREE case evaluation.
