A Pennsylvania man has filed a Xarelto lawsuit against Janssen Research & Development (Janssen) and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals (Bayer), claiming that Xarelto caused him to suffer internal gastrointestinal bleeding.

Xarelto Lawsuit Cites Internal Bleeding

Plaintiff Eugene J. claims that he was initially prescribed Xarelto in April 2018. After taking the blood clot medication for approximately two weeks, Eugene claims that he began to experience negative and serious side effects. These symptoms were severe enough that he sought medical attention.

Eugene claims that on May 2, 2018, he went to the Emergency Department of UPMC Pinnacle Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. At the hospital, he was diagnosed with and treated for gastrointestinal bleeding.

Eugene claims that after his initial visit to the hospital, he was treated for complications of gastrointestinal bleeding on multiple other occasions, including May 2, May 3, May 16, May 29, and June 21. He claims to have suffered from anemia, as well as other complications from internal bleeding caused by the drug.

According to Eugene’s Xarelto lawsuit, Janssen and Bayer had access to at least one clinical scientific study indicating that life-threatening bleeding was a possible risk of the blood-thinning drug. Xarelto’s alleged ability to cause internal bleeding or hemorrhagic complications is concerning and dangerous, as there is no antidote to reverse these side effects.

Xarelto and Atrial Fibrillation

Xarelto is a prescription medicine manufactured and marketed by Janssen and Bayer. It is an anticoagulant medication primarily meant to reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke in people who have atrial fibrillation, a medical condition affecting the way that the heart beats.

During atrial fibrillation, the heart’s upper and lower chambers beat out of sync. This irregular beating often causes a fluttering feeling in the chest. Other symptoms of atrial fibrillation include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and weakness.

As this condition causes the heart to beat and pump blood erratically, it can lead to the formation of blood clots. Blood clots can be very dangerous if they travel to the brain or lungs. Xarelto is meant to prevent blood clots from forming and posing a danger to patients’ health.

Xarelto is also marketed towards patients with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, and for patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.

Xarelto Side Effects

In addition to consumer reports of gastrointestinal bleeding associated with Xarelto, there are many other possible side effects. As Xarelto is a blood thinner, the most common side effect is excessive bleeding. According to the Xarelto website, other side effects may include:

  • Bruising
  • Unexpected bleeding, including nosebleeds, bleeding from gums, or heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Red, pink, or brown urine
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or weakness

Compensation for Victims

If you have been prescribed Xarelto for the treatment of blood clots and have suffered side effects including excessive bleeding or gastrointestinal bleeding, you may qualify to join a Xarelto lawsuit or investigation and pursue compensation for your injuries, pain and suffering, and distress.

Eugene’s Xarelto Lawsuit is Case 2:19-cv-01694-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
