Bayer Offers Settlements for Yaz Blood Clot & Gallbladder Injuries
By Anne Bucher
Yaz, a birth control pill manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, has been marketed as a wonder drug that relieves premenstrual syndrome symptoms and clears acne. However, recent studies have shown that Yaz is associated with higher blood clotting risks than other birth control pills on the market. Use of Yaz has also been tied to gallbladder injuries. The side effects have resulted in numerous drug injury lawsuits, forcing Bayer to pay out millions in lawsuit settlements.FDA Warned Yaz Ads Misleading
After its release in 2006, Yaz became Bayer’s top-selling drug. In 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that Yaz was ineffective at relieving common PMS symptoms. Although Bayer denied any wrongdoing, the company agreed to issue new television advertisements that stated more limited uses for Yaz, including the treatment of premenstrual dysphonic disorder and moderate acne.
Pharmaceutical companies have a responsibility to create safe drugs and to warn about any health risks that may be associated with them. Bayer marketed Yaz as an oral contraceptive that was also approved to treat PMS and acne, even though there was little evidence to support the drug’s effectiveness at treating these conditions. However, Yaz had only been approved to treat moderate acne and PMDD.
Bayer has been accused of downplaying the risks associated with Yaz. As a result, thousands of women have filed Yaz lawsuits against the company. The plaintiffs in these lawsuits argue that they should have been warned of the severe and potentially deadly side effects posed by Yaz.
Yaz Side Effects
Yaz contains a hormone called drospirenone that experts have tied to an increased risk of blood clots. Blood clots can create serious health consequences including breathing problems, stroke or death. Other oral contraceptives that include drospirenone include Beyaz, Ocella and Yasmin. Yasmin is the low-dose version of Yaz. Ocella is a generic version that is manufactured by Barr Laboratories.
A study published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported that women who used birth control pills containing drospirenone were 20 percent more likely to have their gallbladders removed than women who used other popular contraceptive pills.
Other Yaz side effects include migraines, irregular periods, high blood pressure, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, depression and heart attack. In some cases, these side effects can be fatal.
Bayer Offers Settlements to Injured Women
Thousands of women have filed lawsuits against Bayer, claiming that the birth control pill led to serious side effects including blood clots and gallbladder injuries. They complained that the company’s advertising campaign drastically downplayed the potential risks of the drug. Although Bayer denies any wrongdoing, the pharmaceutical company has agreed to pay more than one billion dollars in Yaz lawsuit settlements. The company has recently agreed to settle lawsuits related to gallbladder injuries.
If you have suffered severe side effects from using Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella or Beyaz, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your injuries. Due to the high volume of complaints related to these drugs, Yaz attorneys are looking for others who have suffered serious side effects.
