Bayer Downplayed Health Risks Posed by Mirena IUD
By Anne Bucher
The Mirena IUD is a T-shaped contraceptive device that is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Once the Mirena IUD is implanted into the uterus, it releases a small dose of the hormone levonorgestrel to prevent fertilization. It can be left in the uterus for up to five years.
In 2009, the FDA issued a warning letter to Bayer, claiming that the script used in the Mirena Parties were misleading and overstated the effectiveness of the drug. The agency also claimed that the script left out significant information about the potential for Mirena IUD side effects. After receiving the letter, Bayer stopped hosting Mirena Parties. By this time, however, many women had already chosen to use the Mirena IUD even though they were largely unaware of the potential of dangerous side effects.
Women Have Suffered Significant Mirena IUD Side Effects
While the device has been touted as a convenient and effective form of long-term birth control, many women have come forward to claim that they have suffered severe Mirena IUD side effects, including:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Pelvic pain
- Perforation of the uterus
- Infection
- Vaginal erosion
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Intrauterine pregnancy
- Infertility
Many of these side effects take place when a woman’s body rejects the device as a foreign object, resulting in Mirena IUD migration. When the IUD migrates within the body, it can have serious consequences, including uterine and organ perforation.
Mirena IUD Lawsuits Consolidated in New York Federal Court
More than 100 women have filed Mirena injury lawsuits, alleging that they suffered serious Mirena IUD side effects. They claim that Bayer failed to provide adequate warning about the risk of Mirena IUD migration. Due to the high number of lawsuits with similar allegations, dozens of federally-filed Mirena IUD lawsuits have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The pretrial proceedings for these cases will be handled by one federal judge.
If you or someone you know has suffered from serious Mirena IUD side effects, visit the Mirena IUD Injury Class Action Lawsuit Settlement Investigation to learn more about your legal options. Hundreds of women have already filed Mirena IUD lawsuits, and that number is increasing rapidly as more women become victims of serious side effects of Mirena. The plaintiffs in these lawsuits allege that Bayer knew of the risks associated with the device but failed to warn doctors or patients about the risks. They claim that, had they known about the Mirena IUD migration risk, they would have selected a safer method of birth control. By filing a Mirena IUD lawsuit, you will not only help to hold Bayer accountable for their product’s safety, but you could also receive significant compensation for your injuries.

I am a 25 year old woman who had the mirena inserted in 2014. The entire time I was uncomfortable and in pain and ended up in the hospital multiple times. Ultimately I was left with an incompetent cervix after removal and have had issues conceiving, then almost lost my son at 27 weeks pregnant. I ended up having him early at 35 weeks because of the trauma caused by the IUD. I am now experiencing pelvic pain and possible PID and infertility.
