Baltimore Allergan settlement overview:

  • Who: Allergan Finance LLC reached a $45 million settlement with Baltimore, Maryland.
  • Why: The Allergan settlement resolves claims revolving around Allergan’s role in the nationwide opioid crisis.
  • Where: The case was in the Circuit Court of Maryland for Baltimore City.

AbbVie subsidiary Allergan Finance reached a $45 million settlement with the city of Baltimore, Maryland that ends claims revolving around the company’s alleged role in the nationwide opioid crisis.

The settlement, which Baltimore called an “unprecedented” amount, comes after the city decided to opt out of broader nationwide settlements agreed to by Allergen in recent years, reports Law360.

Baltimore said it would have received only about $7 million over a period of seven years if it had chosen to agree to those prior settlements, rather than a $45 million lump sum payment the city is now set to receive.

“We are fully aware of the devastating toll that the actions of these defendants have taken on our City, and we have shown our commitment to ensuring that they pay their fair share to tackle the harms they have left in the wake of their greed,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said in a statement

Baltimore to spend at least $10M of Allergan settlement on programs to fight opioid epidemic

Baltimore said it plans to spend at least $10 million of the settlement funds on programs created to help fight the opioid epidemic in the city, including its Peer Navigator Program and the Charm City Care Connection.

“We are committed to ensuring that every penny of this and any other amount recovered is put to its most effective and best use to combat the opioid epidemic in Baltimore City at all levels,” Scott said.

Baltimore’s claims centered around two of Allergan’s opioid drugs, Kadian and Norco, which the city said made up less than half of the opioids sent to its pharmacies. The remaining defendants in the city’s lawsuit make up more than 80% of the opioids, according to the city.

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown previously announced in February that the state had reached settlement agreements totaling a combined $238 million with Allergan, Walgreens, Walmart and Teva Pharmaceuticals.

Allergan, along with Teva, also separately agreed in November 2022 to settlements worth $4.25 billion and $2.37 billion, respectively, to end claims from state and local governments that they helped exacerbate the nationwide opioid epidemic.

All the big pharmaceutical companies has settled with all the states involved but none of the people who got addicted and it ruined their lives when does the actual consumers like myself get a part of the money due to the opioid crisis. I live in one of the hardest states hit WV and I don’t think it’s fair we the ones who were affected by this isn’t even the ones getting any money. I guess it is a way for government officials to pad their pockets even more

My life has been dramatically effected. From obtaining pain pills for teeth , to a pain pill addiction, to progression into heroin, to finally having get in methadone maintenance. I can no longer function without it sadly. It’s been almost 7-8yrs on this maintenance successfully. It is the only thing that works & let’s me function normally. I have come to the realization that this is a for life type of thing. Which restricts me from a multitude of things unfortunately. My life would have went a completely different direction if not for these big pharma companies.
