A Tennessee resident recently filed a lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, alleging the company’s drug caused him to suffer an Invokana heart attack.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, Robert M., began taking Invokana at the direction of his doctor in August 2014.
However, as a direct result of taking Invokana, he suffered two major complications, the lawsuit alleges.
The first serious side effect, diabetic ketoacidosis, occurred in December 2014. Later, in July 2015, Robert M. suffered from an alleged Invokana heart attack.
Both the alleged Invokana heart attack and diabetic ketoacidosis caused serious injuries, pain, suffering, and emotional damage.
The Invokana heart attack lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent misrepresentation and concealment, defective design, and failure to warn, among several others.
Invokana Background
Invokana (also known by its generic name, canagliflozin) was first introduced to the drug market in 2013. Invokana is one of several major diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2, or SGLT2 inhibitors.
SGLT2 inhibitor drugs make up a fairly new class of diabetes drugs, but have already become quite popular.
One reason for the rapid rise in popularity of diabetes drugs like was the aggressive marketing tactics employed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which lawsuit alleges actively minimized risks and overplayed the drug as safe and effective. Janssen is a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.
Since Invokana’s introduction to the market, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a growing number of adverse event reports regarding the drug, and has required Janssen to add a series of warnings to the Invokana warning label.
The warning urged users to be aware of diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, respiratory problems, and vomiting.
Invokana Side Effects
Invokana has been linked with a number of serious side effects, from Invokana heart attack to kidney failure to diabetic ketoacidosis.
Invokana is associated with a number of side effects, including, but not limited to:
- Dehydration (dizziness, lightheadedness)
- Vaginal yeast infection
- Yeast infection of the penis
- Low blood sugar
- Serious allergic reaction
- Kidney problems, including kidney failure
Filing an Invokana Heart Attack Lawsuit
A growing number of injured consumers, amid the FDA warnings and recent studies, are pursuing Invokana lawsuits, alleging that Invokana causes severe injuries, including Invokana heart attack problems.
These plaintiffs allege that the drug maker failed to adequately warn about potential Invokana heart attack risks.
These Invokana lawsuits claim that the drug makers actively withheld information about Invokana risks from both the medical community and the general public. Some of these Invokana lawsuits claim that the potential Invokana risks may outweigh its benefits.
If you or someone you love has suffered due an Invokana heart attack or other injury from Invokana, you may be able to file a lawsuit.
While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the side effects of Invokana, pursuing an Invokana lawsuit could result in financial compensation that would help with medical expenses and lost wages.
The Invokana Heart Attack Lawsuit is Case No. 3:16-cv-08735, in the U.S. District Court for the Trenton Division of the District of New Jersey.
In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
