9 Women File Joint Bladder Sling Implant Lawsuit

By Jessica Tyner

vaginal sling implant lawsuitBladder sling and vaginal mesh implants have been linked to serious side effects, and nine women who joined together in a lawsuit are just a few of the latest victims of these surgical mesh implants.

These medical devices come with a host of potentially deadly side effects caused by their synthetic mesh design. The recent joint vaginal mesh lawsuit filed in March 2013 was filed in West Virginia, but the mesh victims come from around the country. The plaintiffs that make up this lawsuit include:

— Two women from Georgia who had Aris-Transobturator slings implanted in 2008 and 2009;
— Three women from Nebraska, Georgia and New York who received the Obtryx Transobturator Mid-Urethral Sling System in 2009;
— A Michigan and Iowa woman who received the TVT-SECUR (TVT-S); and lastly
— An Iowa woman who had Gynemesh transvaginal tape (TVT) implanted in 2008.

Synthetic Vaginal Mesh Warnings Came in 2011

Each of these women — and many like them — had their vaginal slings implanted well before the FDA issued a warning in 2011. According to the FDA’s report, the risks of vaginal mesh implants are more dangerous and common than the manufacturers led physicians and patients to believe. In fact, given the high rate of vaginal mesh side effects, traditional surgery is likely a better option. Unfortunately, this information came too late for many victims.

Most women are given vaginal or bladder sling implants to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or urinary incontinence (SUI). The manufacturers marketed meshes as a way to more effectively and safely treat POP and SUI, but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, the FDA now recommends women undergo traditional surgery as a better and safer means of treating these issues. The FDA’s research shows that 10 percent of women will experience serious side effects with a transvaginal mesh implant.

Vaginal Mesh Worst Case Scenarios

Not only does the FDA now recommend traditional surgeries to treat SUI and POP over mesh implants, but research also suggests that these devices aren’t even effective at treating pain and symptoms. Some women will require many surgeries to correct the damage caused by vaginal mesh, and many women with the mesh will require at least one surgery within the first year of implantation. Prolapse is a painful and uncomfortable condition, and the FDA suggests that vaginal mesh may be useless when it comes to treatment for some women.

Even if vaginal mesh complications are caught early, removing the implant can be expensive and painful. Revision surgeries only add to the pain, suffering and medical bills. Unfortunately, many women trusted that these implants were the answer to their troubles. Given that their physicians chose them, based on a lack of research from the manufacturer’s side, they believed there were little risks involved.
