Doctor visits hospitalized woman.A recently filed Yaz blood clot lawsuit alleges that the generic version of Yaz, Gianvi, caused a woman’s diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. She is seeking damages on multiple counts.

The New York woman was first prescribed Yaz birth control in March 2009 and was later switched to a less expensive generic version in 2010. Soon after she began taking Gianvi, she suffered from a blood clot that subsequently traveled to her lung sometime in November of that year.

According to her Yaz lawsuit, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals heavily promoted the entire oral contraceptive family without properly highlighting the potential risk of side effects including blood clots. The lawsuit alleges that there were enough adverse event reports, including fatalities, that should have prompted label changes.

Instead, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) admonished the drug maker on several occasions, nothing that “Yaz has additional risks because it contains the progestin, drospirenone … which can lead to hyperkalemia in high risk patients, which may result in potentially serious heart and health problems,” according to the complaint regarding Yasmin side effects and pulmonary embolisms in particular.

The agency went on to note that even as it minimized the risks involved with excessive potassium levels, or hyperkalemia, the warning added that “TV ads misleadingly overstate the efficacy of the drug.” Bayer later issued corrective advertising upon the agency’s request.

The Yaz blood clot lawsuit is Clare Murphy v. Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, et al., Case No. 13-cv-10882, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois. She is also seeking damages from Barr Laboratories, a subsidiary of the generic drug manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals.

More than 10,000 women still have pending complaints against the drug maker regarding any of the birth control pill varieties offered by the company. Those who have taken one of these birth control pills and developed problems including deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism may be able to obtain damages or a settlement.
