5 Women from 3 Different States File Yaz/Yasmin Lawsuits

By Andrea Gressman

Yaz side effects lawsuitA Yaz/Yasmin lawsuit was filed by five Illinois women claiming to have suffered adverse side effects from Yaz or Yasmin birth control pills manufactured by Bayer. The filing was done in Illinois’ Southern District U.S. Court, where the current MDL against Bayer is currently in progress.

Alabama’s Cheryl Hill and Jennifer Benefield, Florida’s Rosemary Hampton and Melissa Wray, and Colorado’s Cheryl Campos were given Yasmin or Yaz prescriptions as a contraceptive. They all experienced side effects related to the pills and charge the manufacturer with negligence, failure to provide adequate warning, failure to test adequately and sufficiently, negligent misrepresentation, defective design and manufacturing, and breach of warranties.

Fourth Generation Progestin Drospirenone in Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella is Associated with Blood Clots and Stroke

Drospirenone, which is another name for the progestin Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella contains, has been associated with side effects such as stroke and blood clots. Only available in Ocella, Yaz, and Yasmin, drospirenone is a fourth generation progestin. Ocella is the drug in generic form. Previous progestins have extensive research histories backing them, some going back many years. However, drospirenone fails to have such significant research to support it.

Drospirenone is believed to interact in an unexpected way with the estrogen contained in contraceptive pills. Researchers have stated that drospirenone fails to counterbalance estrogen’s clotting effects in an adequate way.

Researches expressed the possibility that drospirenone potentially causes heart rhythm disturbances resulting from elevated potassium levels in the blood.

Bayer is accused of over-hyping Yasmin and Yaz without adequately disclosing its side effect risks. Additionally, warnings issued by the FDA in both 2003 and 2008 indicate the ads as deceptively inaccurate. After using the medicine, the Yaz/Yasmin lawsuit plaintiffs claim to have suffered serious injuries as a result.

Yaz and Yasmin have common side effects, which include stroke, blood clots, and gallbladder issues. The Yaz/Yasmin lawsuit plaintiffs only used the medication for a short period of time prior to experiencing the adverse side effects commonly associated with the drug.

Amounts of Time varies for Plaintiffs’ use of Yaz or Yasmin

Benefield used the drug for nearly a month, 28 days. Wray used it for a bit longer, a month and then nine additional days. Hampton used the medication for about 5 months. Both Hill and Campos used the drug for over a year.

Benefield, on March 19, 2007 received a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. Wray fell victim to deep vein thrombosis on June 6, 2010. Campos was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism on the December 17, 2005 and had a surgical procedure done for the removal of her gallbladder. That was on July 2, 2004. Hill also had suffered problems associated with her gallbladder, and her surgery to have it removed took place on September 24, 2009.

They seek to hold Bayer accountable for failing to provide fair and adequate warnings pertaining to the risk of the contraceptive pills; they seek compensatory damages totaling more than $75,000.

Drospirenone Links to Blood Clots Cited in Scientific Studies

A connection was made linking drospirenone to blood clots through scientific research. The British Medical Journal reported in 2002 that the Dutch College of General Practitioners recommended that second-generation contraceptive pills be prescribed, as opposed to Yaz, due to venous thrombosis, which 40 women suffered because they took Yasmin.
