Mirena IUD Goes Missing in Woman’s Body

By Jessica Tyner

IUD strings missingThe Mirena IUD is known as one of the most effective forms of birth control, and many women choose it for the convenience and the extremely low levels of hormones it produces. However, it’s also tangled up in a slew of lawsuits because it can migrate after insertion, resulting in dangerous, life-threatening conditions. Recently, a woman named Brandi in Oklahoma has become the latest victim of a migrated Mirena IUD. She is now infertile after suffering a perforated uterus.

Brandi’s Mirena IUD Story

Brandi had Mirena implanted for a year, but at her annual pap checkup her OBGYN couldn’t find the string. Her doctor didn’t think much of it since sometimes the strings are cut too short to be seen during a routine exam. Another year later, the string still wasn’t seen and her doctor ordered an ultrasound to check that it was in place. There was no sign of the IUD on Brandi’s ultrasound.

The missing IUD led to a number of x-rays and ultrasounds to try to locate it, but by now Brandi was having intense stomach cramping. For Brandi, she wasn’t that concerned since she had similar pangs when the IUD was initially inserted. However, one night the pain became so unbearable that she fell off the toilet, passing out due to the intense cramps. Additional x-rays and ultrasounds were performed, but the Mirena IUD’s location remained a mystery.

The only answer was surgery, and Brandi underwent a laproscoptomy to locate the missing Mirena IUD. During surgery, it was discovered that the Mirena IUD had perforated her uterine wall and was hidden in fatty tissues that conveniently shielded the IUD from showing up on x-rays. Brandi was told she could never have any more children — a consideration that she and her husband were looking at.

Mirena Uterine Perforation Not Uncommon

Somewhat fortunately for Brandi, the “only” thing the migrated IUD did was perforate the uterus. Oftentimes, the damage heals on its own, but for some women it can cause organ damage or internal bleeding. Brandi has joined a Mirena class action lawsuit to at the very least help alleviate the medical bills. Although she’s distraught about her inability to have more than one child, thus far she hasn’t included her infertility side effects as part of her Mirena injury claim.

Other women are in worse positions than Brandi, such as those who have yet to have any biological children. Sadly, Brandi’s story isn’t unique. The cost for multiple x-rays and ultrasounds can be immense. Since Brandi couldn’t work during this painful period, she also experienced loss of income.

Are You a Mirena Victim?

Intrauterine devices like Mirena have been gaining in popularity in recent years. They last for up to six years, have few “regular” side effects such as heavy flows, and are highly effective — when they stay in place. If you’ve had the Mirena IUD inserted and suffered from side effects, it’s possible that you have a legal claim.
