Ohio Students Faced Asbestos Exposure as School Work
By John Curran
Â
According to local reports, students as young as their early teens worked without ventilators or masks to take old material out of a local fitness and community center and a resident nearby videotaped the whole process. Asbestos dust reportedly flew up in clouds while they did so, leading some medical experts to question whether or not mesothelioma side effects would result depending on the length of time children were doing remediation.
It may be difficult to separate the actions from the religious affiliation of the school, which tries to keep families away from perceived negative influences of television and athletic events. The most detailed reports came from a local news station, who also reported that Buckeye Education School was already working with EPA officials. It also remains to be seen what other agencies will investigate the school for putting students at risk for asbestos exposure.
The state environmental officials did note that the stripped materials were left in open dumpsters and even the pool, meaning that asbestos exposure could be a possibility for parents and even the school and church officials in Berea. Locals noted that asbestos remediation had been done in schools throughout the town for decades, always under the care of specialized technicians.
While it may seem odd for a school to use children and teens for asbestos removal, the material is a problem that remains for people around the country. Federal agencies are still working in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut on buildings destroyed by Hurricane Sandy to protect people who still have their homes along the coastline. It was one of the primary concerns after the disaster.
Unfortunately, the children in Berea as well as others were likely unaware of the risks of being exposed to asbestos, which includes mesothelioma and asbestosis. People who develop the lung cancer do have legal options available to them, however, with the help of a mesothelioma lawsuit attorney. There are billions of dollars left in the trust fund created by companies for the disease, and a legal remedy may be possible.
