Chantix Caused Depression, Lawsuit Claims

By Matt O’Donnell

Chantix depressionA former Chantix user has decided to sue Pfizer for failing to warn her that using the anti-smoking drug would put her at risk for developing serious psychiatric side effects, including depression. Her Chantix lawsuit joins hundreds others pending in multidistrict litigation alleging similar Chantix side effects.

Plaintiff Sallie Lynne Casey alleges in the Chantix lawsuit that she started taking the medication in July 2009 and subsequently experienced serious neuropsychiatric issues, including depression, aggression, anger and suicidal thoughts. She is suing Pfizer to cover the medical bills and other costs she incurred to treat the mental health-related Chantix side effects she experienced. Her lawsuit charges the drug maker with negligence, strict product liability, breach of implied and express warranty, and more.

Casey is just one of many Chantix users who have come forward in recent years to report Chantix caused undisclosed side effects such as changes in behavior and neuropsychiatric issues. In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed a “black box” warning label on Chantix informing users that recent data showed the smoking cessation drug can cause depression, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide, aggression and anger. Two years later, in June 2011, the FDA updated the Chantix side effects warning again to include heart attack and other severe cardiovascular events. Recent studies have shown Chantix can increase the risk of heart attack by up to 70 percent.

Following the FDA warnings, hundreds of Chantix users have decided to sue Pfizer for not warning the public and medical community about these possible Chantix side effects. A number of Chantix wrongful death lawsuits have also been filed by family members of Chantix users who committed suicide or suffered a heart attack after taking the drug.

Casey’s Chantix side effect lawsuit joins 275 other lawsuits that have been consolidated in multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the Northern District of Alabama. The Chantix lawsuit MDL, In re: Chantix (Varenicline) Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2092), was created to help expedite the legal process and hopefully recover settlements for the victims.

If you or a loved one suffered Chantix side effects such as depression, attempted suicide, heart attack or death, you may have a case to pursue compensation from Pfizer to help cover your medical expenses, pain, suffering and more. A qualified Chantix lawyer can provide a free consultation about your case.

  2. K says:

I took this medication and the only adverse effect I experienced was bad dreams. It’s been 4 years and I haven’t touched a cigarette since. It was a successful treatment for me. I’m sorry you all had bad experiences….but let’s be real…. Withdrawal from any addiction fluctuates your mental health.

  3. A A says:

I had major depression, night terrors and attempted suicide. I lost everything! My career marriage and home. There are records at a center for treatment.

  4. Clyde Miller says:

Completely bad dreams, ruins relationships, haunting images.

  5. Tammy Dodge says:

I used Chantix years ago to stop smoking and I tried very hard to stop. After weeks of laying on my couch feeling so sick that I could hardly get off of my couch, that was enough for me. I knew by then something was very wrong with this medication, nobody should feel this terrible and sick. It was worse than any flu I have ever had. I literally could not function.

  6. KISHA A PORTER says:

My husband has a bunch of this stuff right now. Add me.
