Actos Whistleblower Lawsuit Claims Takeda Hid Bladder Cancer Risks

By Matt O’Donnell

Actos whistleblower lawsuitA recent Actos whistleblower lawsuit is adding fuel to claims raised in hundreds of Actos injury lawsuits filed by patients who suffered severe side effects of the diabetes drug. The whistleblower, Dr. Helen Ge, accuses the drug’s manufacturer of influencing reports of adverse Actos side effects in an effort to subdue findings that Actos increased the risk of congestive heart failure and bladder cancer.

According to the 2012 Actos whistleblower lawsuit, Actos “is not as safe as Takeda has led the FDA, healthcare professionals and the general public to believe. Rather, the FDA and the public were led to believe that Actos is safer because Takeda failed to properly report all of the Actos-related adverse events to the FDA.”

The Actos whistleblower lawsuit further alleges that Takeda is guilty of “publicly denying the casual relationship between bladder cancer and Actos even though Takeda knew otherwise as far back as the 90’s when Actos was tested on animals and bladder cancer was detected.”

Dr. Ge alleges in the Actos whistleblower lawsuit that executives at Takeda Pharmaceuticals attempted to direct medical reviewers to “change their professional opinion” regarding the potential dangers of Actos side effects with regards to heart problems and bladder cancer. Dr. Ge, whose role at the company was to write such medical reviews, further alleges that when she raised concerns regarding this request, she was terminated. According to her whistleblower lawsuit, Dr. Ge had direct knowledge of the Actos bladder cancer risk and encountered resistance from her supervisors when she tried to report these risks, who directed her to change her “related” assessment to “unrelated.” Dr. Ge claims she reviewed more than 100 bladder cancer reports collected in Takeda’s database, but the company only reported 72 to the FDA. She also claims carcinogenesis (the creation of cancer) was discovered during initial Actos animal studies, and that Takeda failed to report several hundred congestive heart failure events as serious between late 2007 and 2010.

The whistleblower allegations support claims made in hundreds of Actos injury lawsuits filed by patients across the country who suffered severe side effects such as bladder cancer and heart failure. Many of these lawsuit Plaintiffs allege Takeda was aware of these serious Actos side effects but chose to hide them from the public in order to get the drug on the market and increase its bottom line at the expense of patients.

If you suffered an Actos side effect such as bladder cancer, bladder tumors or congestive heart failure, you may have a case to seek compensation from Takeda for failure to warn, negligence, defective manufacture, and more.
