Shimano North America Bicycle and Shimano North America Holding agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that certain Shimano cranksets are defective and dangerous.
The Shimano settlement benefits consumers who purchased, received, were given and/or owned a Shimano crankset manufactured before July 2019. This includes individuals who purchased, received, were given or owned a bicycle equipped with a Shimano crankset.
Shimano cranksets are bicycle components that connect the pedals to the bike’s bottom bracket. Shimano is a bike manufacturer that sells various bike components.
According to a class action lawsuit, Shimano cranksets are defective and dangerous. The plaintiffs claim that the cranksets can delaminate and separate from the bike, causing serious injury.
The Shimano class action lawsuit claims the company knew about the defect but failed to warn consumers. Instead, Shimano allegedly continued to advertise and sell the defective cranksets.
In September 2023, Shimano recalled certain cranksets manufactured before July 2019. The recall affected Ultegra FC-6800, Ultegra FC-R8000, Dura-Ace FC-9000, Dura-Ace FC-R9100 and Dura-Ace FC-R9100-P cranksets with certain production codes.
Shimano has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the allegations.
Under the terms of the Shimano crankset settlement, class members can receive an extended warranty, enhanced inspections and reimbursement for replacement costs.
Class members are eligible for an extended warranty on Shimano cranksets. The settlement extends the duration of Shimano’s express warranty until July 29, 2027. This extension only applies to bonding separation and delamination of the crankset.
Class members are also eligible for enhanced inspections. Under the terms of the settlement, Shimano agreed to enhance the inspections offered under its recall. Enhanced inspections will include a magnifying device with enhanced lighting, an enhanced manual and more.
Class members can also receive reimbursement for replacement costs. Class members who replaced their cranksets due to delamination or separation can receive reimbursement for reasonable out-of-pocket costs for purchasing and installing a replacement crankset.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Dec. 29, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2026.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Aug. 4, 2026.
