The city of Oakland, California, has agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach that compromised sensitive personal information.
The Oakland data breach settlement benefits individuals whose personal information was stored, possessed or controlled by the city of Oakland and who were notified by the city of the data security incident.
According to the class action lawsuit, the city of Oakland failed to protect sensitive personal information from a data breach that occurred in February 2023.
The breach compromised sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, medical information, city record information and city internal report information.
Oakland is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area with a population of about 440,000.
The city has not admitted any wrongdoing but has agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Oakland data breach settlement, class members can receive up to $350 for ordinary losses, including up to three hours of lost time at a rate of $25 per hour.
Class members can also get up to $10,000 for extraordinary losses, including documented monetary loss or fraud caused by the misuse of their personal information.
All class members are eligible to receive three years of three-bureau credit monitoring services.
Class members who served as police officers for the city of Oakland and received a written notice of the data security incident are also eligible to receive a cash payment of $175.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is April 6, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the Oakland data breach settlement is scheduled for June 3, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by May 6, 2025.

Individuals whose personal information was stored, possessed or controlled by the city of Oakland and who were notified of a data breach in March 2023.

Can we still file if we don’t live in California or Oakland?
I was a Verizon customer for many years the company was taken a lot of fees can you please put my name in this claim
My bank account and private information have been compromised by The City of Oakland by not securing that data. I am a long time employee(Park Supervisor I ) with OPW.
