Murfreesboro Medical Clinic (MMC) agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach that compromised patient information.
The Murfreesboro Medical Clinic settlement benefits individuals whose private information may have been compromised in the April 2023 Murfreesboro Medical Clinic data breach and who received a data breach notice.
In May 2023, Murfreesboro Medical Clinic announced it was the victim of a ransomware attack in April 2023. During the attack, hackers allegedly gained access to sensitive patient information, including names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, health insurance information, driver’s license numbers and more.
Patients quickly took legal action against the clinic, arguing that it could have prevented the data breach through reasonable cybersecurity measures. Plaintiffs in the case say that Murfreesboro Medical Clinic failed in its duty to protect patient information from cybercriminals.
Murfreesboro Medical Clinic is a physician-owned ambulatory clinic in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Murfreesboro Medical Clinic has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a class action settlement to resolve the allegations.
Under the terms of the Murfreesboro Medical Clinic settlement, class members can receive up to $500 for out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach. This includes unreimbursed fraud or identity theft losses, professional fees, credit expenses and up to two hours of lost time at a rate of $25 per hour.
Class members who experienced more than two hours of lost time can receive additional compensation for lost time, subject to a $200,000 aggregate cap.
The settlement also provides two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. These services include real-time credit monitoring, at least $1 million in identity theft insurance and access to fraud resolution agents.
Murfreesboro Medical Clinic agreed to implement new data security measures to better protect patient information. These changes include employee training, improved firewall protocols, record deletion protocols and more.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Dec. 15, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the Murfreesboro Medical Clinic data breach settlement is scheduled for Jan. 16, 2026.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by April 14, 2026.
