KSE Sportsman Media subscriber privacy $9.5M class action settlement

KSE Sportsman Media agreed to a $9.5 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it shared magazine subscriber information with third parties without consent.

The settlement benefits direct purchasers of Outdoor Sportsman publications whose information was shared with third parties between June 16, 2015, and July 30, 2016. According to the settlement website, there are 14,503 direct purchasers included under this definition.

According to the class action lawsuit, KSE Sportsman Media shared subscriber information with third parties without first getting consent. This information sharing allegedly violated Michigan’s Preservation of Personal Privacy Act.

KSE Sportsman Media, also known as Outdoor Sportsman Group, operates several outdoor- and gun-related magazines, including Wildfowl, Firearms News and Game & Fish.

KSE Sportsman Media hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $9.5 million settlement to resolve the privacy class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. According to the settlement website, each class member is projected to receive $420. Actual payments may be higher or lower depending on the number of participating class members. 

KSE also agreed to stop disclosing Michigan subscribers’ information to third parties in order to comply with state laws.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Nov. 17, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Jan. 4, 2024.

In order to receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 4, 2024.
