Google is facing a certified class action lawsuit alleging the company improperly ended free access to legacy Google Apps accounts despite earlier assurances that users would retain continued access at no cost.
The Google class action is filed on behalf of individuals or entities in the United States who:
- Signed up for the free version of Google Apps between Aug. 1, 2006, and Dec. 6, 2012;
- Were still free G Suite customers as of Jan. 19, 2022;
- Had at least one active user on their account during the 180 days prior to Jan. 19, 2022;
- Were not eligible to opt out before being charged for Workspace.
According to the G Suite class action lawsuit, Google promised customers who signed up for a free version of Google Apps (later renamed G Suite Legacy Free Edition) that they would retain continued access to the free version. However, the company allegedly acted unfairly and breached its agreements with certain customers when it ended the free program for them in 2022, requiring them to choose between paying for Google Workspace or having their account suspended.
Google Workspace is a platform that offers a variety of services, including email, calendars, cloud storage and more.
Google continues to maintain that it did not breach any agreements with users.
No class action settlement has been reached, and no payments or benefits are currently available. Any monetary relief would depend on the outcome of a future trial or a potential settlement.
The deadline for class members to opt out of the Google G Suite litigation is Jan. 5, 2026. A trial date has not yet been scheduled.
If compensation becomes available later in the case, class members will receive further instructions on how to obtain any benefits.
