Varsity Brands agreed to pay $82.5 million to resolve claims it violated antitrust laws by overcharging for cheer competitions, camps and apparel.

The Varsity Brands class action settlement benefits consumers in 35 states, including California, Florida and New York, who indirectly paid Varsity Brands for registration, entrance or other fees and expenses associated with one or more Varsity cheer competitions; Varsity cheer apparel; Varsity cheer camp fees; or accommodations at one or more Varsity cheer competitions between Dec. 10, 2016, and March 31, 2024.

Varsity Brands is a cheerleading company that offers camps, competitions and other events. It also sells cheerleading apparel.

According to the Varsity Brands class action, Varsity Brands violated antitrust laws by working with other companies to create a monopoly over cheerleading events. As a result of this alleged monopoly, Varsity Brands was able to charge inflated prices for competitions, camps and apparel, the plaintiffs say.

The Varsity Brands antitrust class action lawsuit claims the company’s conduct violated federal antitrust laws and similar laws in 24 states.

Varsity Brands has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve the allegations with an $82.5 million class action settlement.

Under the terms of the Varsity Brands class action settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the amount they paid for eligible competitions, camps and apparel.

The settlement fund for payments will be divided into three pools based on the type of purchase made by class members: 53% for competition payments, 26% for camp payments and 21% for apparel payments.

Exact payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed and the amount each class member paid for eligible purchases.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Sept. 26, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the Varsity Brands class action settlement was Nov. 22, 2024.

Class members must submit a valid claim form by May 5, 2025.
