NBA Properties and Dapper Labs agreed to a $7.05 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims they violated federal privacy laws by sharing NBA Top Shot users’ information with Facebook.
The settlement benefits individuals who had an active Facebook account and an NBA Top Shot account between June 15, 2020, and Jan. 30, 2025.
According to the class action lawsuit, NBA Properties and Dapper Labs disclosed NBA Top Shot users’ personally identifiable information to Meta (Facebook) without consent. Plaintiffs in the case say this violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) and California privacy laws.
NBA Top Shot is a digital trading card game that allows players to buy, sell and trade digital highlights from NBA games. The game was developed by Dapper Labs, a blockchain technology company.
The defendants have not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $7.05 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve the privacy allegations.
Under the terms of the NBA Top Shot settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund.
According to the settlement website, each claimant is estimated to receive between $36 and $122. Actual payments may be higher or lower depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement.
The defendants also agreed to suspend the operation of the Meta Tracking Pixel on the NBA Top Shot website to prevent any further violations of the VPPA.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Nov. 17, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the NBA video privacy class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Dec. 19, 2025.
To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Dec. 16, 2025.
