According to a class action lawsuit, Mid America Pet Food products were contaminated with salmonella, a dangerous bacteria that can cause serious illness and even death. The plaintiffs claim that the company knew or should have known about the contamination but failed to warn consumers.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention completed a Mid America Pet Food recall investigation in 2024.
Mid America Pet Food has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $5.5 million class action settlement to resolve the allegations.
Under the terms of the pet food settlement, class members can receive compensation for pet injuries and food purchases.
Class members who submit valid documented pet injury claims can receive up to $100,000 for their claims.
Documented pet injury claims are those supported by receipts, invoices, veterinarian records and other similar evidence. Undocumented claims, or claims supported only by a declaration, are capped at $50 for pets that became ill but did not die and $100 for pets that died.
Class members can also receive compensation for food purchases. Documented food purchase claims are paid at 100% of the approved submitted losses. Undocumented food purchase claims are capped at $40, with a maximum of two bags per claim.
If funds remain in the settlement fund after all valid claims are paid, class members may receive a proportional increase in their payment.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 6, 2026.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2026.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 5, 2026.
