Pfizer has agreed to a $44 million class action settlement to resolve claims that its Chantix smoking cessation drug was contaminated with a nitrosamine, a cancer-causing agent.

The Chantix settlement benefits individuals and third-party payors who paid any amount of money for retail purchases of Chantix in the United States and its territories between Sept. 29, 2015, and Sept. 17, 2021.

Plaintiffs in the nitrosamine lawsuit claim that Pfizer failed to comply with current good manufacturing practices, which resulted in Chantix becoming contaminated with a nitrosamine. Nitrosamines are probable human carcinogens linked to stomach cancer, liver cancer and other cancers.

Chantix is a prescription medication manufactured by Pfizer that helps adults quit smoking by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Pfizer has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $44 million class action settlement to resolve the allegations.

Under the terms of the Chantix settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the amount they paid for Chantix. Class members who paid a higher amount for the drug will receive a larger share of the net settlement fund. No payment estimates are available at this time.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Sept. 14, 2026.

The final approval hearing for the class action settlement is scheduled for Oct. 13, 2026.

To receive a nitrosamine lawsuit payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 14, 2026.
