Professional Finance Co. (PFC) agreed to a $2.5 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2022 data breach.
The PFC data breach class action settlement benefits individuals whose information was compromised in a February 2022 data breach.
In February 2022, the company learned that an unauthorized third party accessed files containing sensitive consumer information. Affected consumers took legal action, arguing that PFC could have prevented the data breach through reasonable cybersecurity measures.
PFC is a debt collection agency that collects on behalf of healthcare providers, retailers, banks and other businesses.
The company has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $2.5 million to resolve the data breach class accusations.
Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive up to $500 for documented out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach. These expenses may include bank fees, credit expenses, fraudulent charges, professional fees and more.
Class members whose Social Security numbers were included in the data breach can receive additional benefits. These class members can receive $50 and 24 months of free credit monitoring.
Class members whose Social Security numbers were not included in the data breach can receive 24 months of free identity theft monitoring.
The deadline for exclusion and objection was Jan. 13, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the PFC data breach settlement is scheduled for April 17, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by April 25, 2025.
