The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is returning money to consumers who were unable to access funds on their NetSpend prepaid debit cards.

The settlement benefits consumers who got a NetSpend card between Jan. 1, 2010, and Aug. 31, 2016, who did not activate the card before Aug. 31, 2016, and who had fees deducted from their card balance.

According to the FTC, NetSpend denied or delayed the activation of its prepaid debit cards — causing consumers to be unable to use their prepaid funds. In addition, NetSpend allegedly charged consumers fees that reduced the balances on their prepaid cards.

NetSpend is a prepaid debit card company that offers “alternative financial services.”

NetSpend agreed to resolve the FTC lawsuit with a settlement. In June 2022, the FTC sent over $10 million in refund money to more than 430,000 NetSpend consumers.

Now the FTC is accepting claim forms from consumers who did not previously receive a refund payment to issue the remaining funds.

Claimants can receive a full refund of the fees they had deducted from their card balance.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline.

The court approved the NetSpend FTC settlement April 10, 2017.

In order to receive refund money from the NetSpend settlement, consumers must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 21, 2023. Consumers who already received a refund payment from the FTC should not file a claim.

Who’s Eligible

Consumers who got a NetSpend card between Jan. 1, 2010, and Aug. 31, 2016, who did not activate the card before Aug. 31, 2016, and who had fees deducted from their card balance.

Without fail every month or every other month. I’m having to get a replacement card due to purchases that I have no idea what they are. This is where I get my direct deposit for my SSDI. I’m constantly late paying my phone, storage, and other bills. I my always having to pay late fees due to netspend closing the account and having to wait about 2 weeks or pay $25 express delivery. This totally unacceptable and ridiculous. FYI STAY AWAYS FROM NETSPEND

  4. Misty Paschal says:

Yeah I got a NetSpend Card and it also took money from my balance. And when I called them and said something about it they basically said I was a liar. So I use NetSpend anymore. Oh they never gave my money back either. It was $200.00 they stole from me.

Fraud I jus receive my SSI check for 1,100 , I called the agent to have my money transferred to another card remind you I haven’t touched my card since I transferred my money. So I went to an ATM the next day to withdraw money I was declined on the screen of the ATM Machine said to call my bank institute I called them immediately and they said the card I jus recently had my money transferred to was blocked and they was asking me for documents to unlock my card so i emailed the documents to the email they provided me and they say the never received no documents and they kept asking me the same questions over and over like they was making sure the had the right info to access my account . So I went to check my balance and it say 814 and I know for fact it was 1,100 on my card. This card carrier is a big Fraud.

16 yr old working at restaurant chain. He does not have a bank account. He signed up for Netspend now known as Skylight. Lost first card. They reissued second card. Doesn’t work. Restaurant says money deposited to Netspend/Skylight so it is out of their hands and will not help at all. Netspend/Skylight needs proof of ID- so drivers license and birth certificate emailed to skylight….Not good enough. They need proof of address- drivers license and 4 paycheck stubs not good enough because paycheck stubs are 3 months old ( because that’s how long he has been out of work and trying to get his money. Basically he no longer wanted to work without getting paid) School transcripts were on the list of acceptable documents…….guess what, you got it….not valid. Even though he went to school and received transcripts from front desk and yes it had his address on it! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Poor kid. It’s been going on for 8 months
