AT&T agreed to pay $14 million to resolve class action lawsuit claims it charged illegal, undisclosed administrative fees to California customers.
The settlement benefits AT&T customers residing in California (based on their last known billing address) who had a post-paid wireless service plan and who were charged an administrative fee on their account between June 20, 2015, and June 16, 2022.
AT&T is a phone company that provides service to customers around the country. The company provides 5G service to over 255 million people in over 16,000 cities in America.
According to a 2021 class action lawsuit, AT&T charged California customers a “bogus” administrative fee of $1.99 per phone line each month.
Plaintiffs in the case argue this fee doesn’t actually pay for administrative costs but instead allows the company to charge more per month than advertised. AT&T allegedly raises these fees regularly, despite financial statements that show the company’s administrative costs are decreasing.
“Through this scheme, AT&T has unfairly and improperly extracted hundreds of millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains from California consumers,” the AT&T fees class action lawsuit contends.
California AT&T customers claim they were never informed they would be charged these administrative fees each month. The plaintiffs contend customers learn of these fees for the first time when they are charged administrative fees on monthly billing statements. Even then, AT&T allegedly buries any mention of these fees within the statement in an attempt to hide the undisclosed fees from consumers.
According to the AT&T administrative fees class action lawsuit, customers would not have committed to phone contracts with the company if they were properly informed of all fees they would be charged.
AT&T hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $14 million to resolve these allegations.
Under the terms of the AT&T administrative fee lawsuit settlement, class members can receive a cash payment.
Class members will receive an equal share of the net settlement fund if they choose to participate in the deal. Payments are estimated to be $20, but may be higher or lower depending on the number of class members who file a claim with the administrative fees settlement.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Sept. 29, 2022.
The final approval hearing in the AT&T administrative fees settlement is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2022.
In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 29, 2022.
