If you are a victim of asbestos cancer risk, you may be able to seek compensationTests commissioned by the Environmental Working Group have reportedly shown the cancer-causing chemical asbestos in a toy makeup kit meant for children may pose a serious asbestos cancer risk.

The EWG commissioned these laboratory tests for the Princess Girl’s All-in-One Deluxe Makeup Palette, manufactured by IQ Toys. The lab found that in the kit’s eye shadow, every gram of the product contained more than 4 million structures of asbestos fiber.

Asbestos is a mineral that, for a long time, was used in a wide range of materials for construction and manufacturing. However, it was discovered decades ago that asbestos fibers are dangerous, can be easily inhaled and, in the lungs, can cause serious illness, such as cancer. Indeed, asbestos is considered a human carcinogen—that is, a substance capable of causing cancer in humans.

Toy products containing asbestos could pose a serious asbestos cancer risk to children. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, “There is no ‘safe’ level of exposure for any type of asbestos fiber. Asbestos exposures as short in duration as a few days have caused mesothelioma in humans.”

The EWG issued a press release mid-January, noting that “Amazon, Ebay, and any other retailer marketing this and similar makeup kits toys from IQ Toys should take heed of these test results and immediately pull these types of products from their websites,” said Nneka Leiba, Vice President for Healthy Living Science with EWG. “Taking steps to safeguard children from exposure to one of the deadliest carcinogens in the world should always come before profits.”

After this press release was issued, it appears that the manufacturer, along with Amazon and Ebay, have taken the product down.

The child’s makeup palette is the latest in a string of recent news about asbestos cancer risk, including Johnson & Johnson’s recall of baby powder products, an FDA alert about asbestos-containing cosmetics at the tween retailer Claire’s, and more.

“It seems every time someone tests talc-based toys for the deadly carcinogen, they find it,” said Scott Faber, EWG’s senior vice president for government affairs.
