Women who suffer from Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) are often treated with a vaginal mesh implant, but this can lead to a high vaginal mesh injury risk.
Hundreds of thousands of women have have been implanted with vaginal mesh devices since their release onto the market.
Now a growing number of injured women are coming forward, complaining about serious vaginal mesh complications like bleeding or mesh erosion and perforation.
Vaginal Mesh Injury Risk
Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is a condition wherein a pelvic organ, such as the bladder, drops from its normal position to push against the vagina walls. Pelvic organs should be located in the lower belly.
Women are most susceptible to Pelvic Organ Prolapse just after childbirth or a surgery. After a person undergoes childbirth or certain surgeries, their muscles may be more likely to weaken or stretch, which can allow for POP. This can cause major bladder problems, as well as poor bowel control.
Just under 50 percent of women over the age of 40 who have gone through vaginal childbirth will suffer from Pelvic Organ Prolapse.
Women with a high body mass index (BMI) after pregnancy have a higher risk of Pelvic Organ Prolapse. Dr. Marsha K. Guess, the lead researcher in a recent POP study, said that “the higher the BMI one year after delivery, the higher the risk for having pelvic floor laxity and increased odds for early state pelvic organ prolapse.”
Women who experience Pelvic Organ Prolapse are often treated with a vaginal mesh implant. Vaginal mesh implants are used to provide support for a weak and prolapsed organs.
However, vaginal mesh devices have in recent years become the target of a growing number of complaints and lawsuits, claiming that the mesh offers more risk than the reward.
According to lawsuits, vaginal mesh injury risk may include a number of severe complications. The side effects that women have reported include, but are not limited to:
- Vaginal mesh erosion
- Bladder infection and irritation
- Urinary tract obstruction
- Incontinence
- Bladder, bowel, or urethra injury
- Pelvic blood vessel damage
- Painful intercourse
- Bleeding after intercourse
Two of the more common side effects linked with vaginal mesh injury risk are mesh erosion and organ perforation, which can lead to bleeding, severe or chronic pain, infection, and nerve damage problems. Mesh erosion can cause a device to perforate nearby organs, which can lead to permanent organ damage.
Surgery to treat vaginal mesh complications can be complicated, given that it passes very close to essential nerves. In some cases, removing a defective or harmful vaginal mesh implant can be difficult or impossible.
Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits
Thousands of women have filed vaginal mesh failure lawsuits so far, alleging that manufacturers failed to adequately warn consumers and the medical community about the high vaginal mesh injury risk. In some cases, vaginal mesh failure lawsuits have led to financial damages of millions of dollars.
Thousands of these vaginal mesh lawsuits have already been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation, or MDL.
As information about the high vaginal mesh injury risk associated with these devices becomes more widespread, an increasing number of women are filing vaginal mesh injury risk lawsuits over their own complications.
If you or someone you love has experienced vaginal mesh side effects such as organ perforation or bleeding, you may be able to file a vaginal mesh lawsuit.
