Twenty-eight plaintiffs from all over the country have filed a consolidated Essure lawsuit against Bayer Healthcare, claiming that they have experienced serious physical injuries after using the birth control device.
Essure Side Effects
Plaintiffs involved in the Essure lawsuit allege a variety of serious injuries, including the following:
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Pregnancy
- Abdominal pain
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Heavy bleeding
- Pain during intercourse
- Weight fluctuation
- Severe back pain
- Migraines
These are not all of the complications noted in this Essure lawsuit. Some plaintiffs also allege that their Essure devices are defective, having migrated from its original placement and perforated areas outside of the fallopian tubes.
In some cases, plaintiffs have had to undergo hysterectomies in order to remove their Essure devices due to danger.
One plaintiff, Melissa T., was implanted with the Essure birth control device on September 26, 2014. Shortly after the procedure, she began suffering serious menstrual, abdominal, back pain, and pain during intercourse, as well as symptoms of depression and fatigue.
About three months after the initial procedure, Melissa went through an examination and discovered that the Essure coil on her right side had migrated from its fallopian tube. By April 2016, Melissa’s pain had gotten so bad she was admitted to the emergency room, the Essure lawsuit states.
Essure Background
Implantation with Essure birth control coils has become a popular method of permanent birth control since its release onto the market. Essure was developed by Bayer Healthcare, and was approved in 1998.
The Essure device has two separate metal coils which are implanted into a woman’s fallopian tubes. It takes months following the initial Essure procedure for the coils to become effective, expanding in place and allowing tissue to grow around them. Eventually, this results in completely blocking the fallopian tubes.
According to Bayer Healthcare advertising and marketing, this is a safe and effective method of permanent birth control. Bayer Healthcare has continuously marketed Essure as a safer, simpler, and more effective method of permanent birth control than other options currently available to women, the lawsuit claims.
Because of Bayer’s Essure birth control popularity, problems with the device could impact thousands of women. In 2007, around 700,000 American women underwent tubal ligation.
Filing an Essure Lawsuit
Thousands of women who have undergone the Essure birth control implantation procedure have later filed adverse event reports over a variety of serious Essure side effects.
Some have even filed an Essure lawsuit against Bayer Healthcare, like the 28 plaintiffs in this lawsuit, claiming that the company either knew or should have known about the serious risks linked with their product, including perforation, ectopic pregnancy, heavy bleeding, and pain.
If you or someone you love has suffered from any of these Essure side effects or others after being implanted with the Essure birth control device, you may be able to file an Essure lawsuit.
The Essure Lawsuit is Case No. 2:16-cv-03049-JP, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
