An Illinois man recently filed a new Stryker LFIT hip lawsuit against hip device manufacturer Howmedica, alleging his hip implant was defective, causing serious injuries.
The plaintiff, Randall A., was implanted with a Stryker LFIT hip device on Jan. 31, 2008. The device used was the Restoration implant, which includes a metal-on-metal LFIT femoral head component.
However, sometime after implantation with the device, Randall alleges he began suffering serious injuries that have led to further pain and additional medical expenses.
His Stryker LFIT hip lawsuit alleges that he suffered from metallosis, a kind of metal poisoning, from the chromium and cobalt from his implant. According to the Stryker LFIT hip lawsuit, these injuries were directly caused by the defective device.
Randall filed his Stryker LFIT hip lawsuit on Dec. 27, 2017 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The Stryker LFIT hip lawsuit lists multiple claims, including negligence, defective design, manufacturing defect, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, negligent misrepresentation and others. Randall’s spouse also filed on one count of loss of consortium.
The Stryker metal hip device was later recalled from the market due to reports of these injuries. However, for some — like Randall — the damage had already been done.
Stryker LFIT Hip Implant Side Effects
The Stryker hip implant recall came in response to reports of serious device side effects, including what is known as metallosis. Metallosis occurs when two components of a metal-on-metal device rub together, which releases metal particles into the bloodstream. In some cases, an excessive amount of metal particles can be released, which can actually cause significant harm, killing off surrounding tissue and nearby bone.
Other reported Stryker hip implant side effects include dislocation and dissociation of the device.
Serious complications like metallosis and dissociation can necessitate revision surgery to replace the defective implant and alleviate symptoms. Of course, any additional surgery will bring with it its own risks of infection or injury, as well as additional medical expenses.
A growing number of patients like Randall who have been implanted with these devices are choosing to file a Stryker LFIT hip lawsuit, alleging that Stryker and its parent company, Howmedica, failed to give adequate warning of the serious side effects associated its hip implant device.
Serious side effects that have been reported after implantation with the Stryker LFIT hip system:
- Hip implant failure
- Serious physical pain
- Emotional and mental distress
- Medical and surgical expenses
- Loss of enjoyment of life
