Pinnacle hip replacement leads to problemsNumerous patients who have opted for the all metal DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system have allegedly experienced significant device complications that required revision surgery.

One of the most recent cases involves the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement device complications comes from a man from Tennessee, who opted to file legal action against DePuy Orthopaedics and parent company Johnson & Johnson.

Plaintiff Paul S. says DePuy failed to warn him about the allegedly defective nature of the all metal DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system, which he claims contributed to serious chronic injuries. According to the DePuy metal help lawsuit, Paul opted for the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system to treat his deteriorating hip joints.

The all metal DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system first entered the marketed in 2000, and consisted of metal on metal hip implant components that were supposed to be more durable and longer lasting than ceramic or plastic models. With these benefits in mind, Paul says he had the all metal Pinnacle hip replacement system implanted on Jan. 18, 2006.

The metal on metal hip replacement system consisted of a DePuy Pinnacle Acetabular Cup and a metal liner, which were marketed as a safe and effective prosthetic option for patients looking to restore hip function. However, Paul allegedly suffered painful device complications instead and has been forced to contend with them ever since.

Even though metal on metal hip complications can be very painful to live with, Paul says he has yet to undergo revision surgery for these device complications.

Overview of Metal on Metal Hip Implant Complications

The DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system and other metal on metal hip replacements were advertised to be higher quality than plastic or ceramic models when they were released, with most of them being customizable to patients.

This made these all metal hip replacement systems very popular among younger prosthetic patients looking to live an active lifestyle. However, there have been a number of metal on metal hip implant recalls over the years due to reports of serious device complications.

The majority of problems with all metal hip replacements stem from their ball and socket joint components interacting, which can shed metal ions into the bloodstream. This can cause metallosis, or metal blood poisoning. The interactions can also cause a multitude of painful side effects including, but not limited to:

  • Debilitating Pain
  • Fretting
  • Corrosion
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Formation of Pseudotumors
  • Tissue Death surrounding the Implant

These issues are often only resolved through revision surgery, which is considered riskier than the initial implant surgery due to a higher risk of infection. It is important to note that over 1,300 injury reports regarding the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system have been submitted to the FDA.

Even though these metal hip implant complications can be devastating to patients, DePuy and other companies allegedly failed to disclose this information to patients. Paul states he would not have opted for the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system, if he had known about the potential device complications.

Paul is seeking a number of damages in his DePuy metal hip lawsuit, including counts of negligence and failure to warn. His DePuy metal hip lawsuit is Case No. 3:18-cv-02969-K, in the U.S. District Court of Northern Texas, Dallas Division.
