Zithromax, widely known as a Z-Pak or azithromycin, is a powerful antibiotic manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.
During the past few years, several complaints and studies have indicated that Zithromax antibiotic problems include a dangerous and potentially fatal risk of kidney damage or failure.
Zithromax is a type of drug with the generic name azithromycin, which belongs to a family of medications called the macrolide antibiotics. As a macrolide antibiotic, Zithromax is most commonly used to treat ear infections, lung infections, skin infections, throat infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and respiratory infections.
Zithromax Antibiotic Problems
Among the most common side effects of this semi-synthetic drug include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and nausea. Other less severe antibiotic problems may also include loss of appetite, vaginal itching, skin rash, stomach cramps, and head pain.
However, Zithromax has also been pointed as the reason for some severe medication side effects, though these cases are said to be rare. Some of these serious medication side effects are: hearing loss, pancreatitis, liver failure, abnormally low blood pressure, hives, seizures, yellowing of skin or eyes.
Additionally, one of the more severe Zithromax antibiotic reactions is kidney damage or failure.
Zithromax Kidney Damage/Failure
Zithromax was approved by the FDA in June 1996. Pfizer received numerous reports of adverse antibiotic reactions, specifically involving kidney failure soon after the drug’s release.
However, there are additional reports that Pfizer knew about potential Zithromax side effects as early as 1998, but waited to change the warning label until they were required by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to do so in late 2000.
Zithromax kidney damage or failure symptoms include:
- Metallic taste in the mouth/ammonia breath
- Nausea and vomiting
- Changes in urination
- Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, face and/or hands
- Fatigue
- Skin rash/itching
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Feeling cold
- Leg pain
