Essure Side Effects LawsuitAmong the side effects of Essure permanent birth control is irregular bleeding after Essure procedure.

Essure birth control is a permanent, non-surgical sterilization procedure for women that was approved by the FDA in 2002.

Coils made of stainless steel on the inside, but a nickel alloy on the outside, are covered in small fibers to produce a fibrotic reaction when inserted into the fallopian tubes.

After three months of the body reacting by producing tissue growth, the fallopian tubes are blocked, forming a barrier between sperm and eggs.

Women have reported numerous debilitating side effects, allegedly caused by Essure. In addition to irregular bleeding, heavier menstrual bleeding after Essure procedure has been reported as well.

Other reported side effects include headaches, nausea, joint pain, abdominal pain and muscle weakness. Some women report debilitating pain in the back, the ovaries and the uterus.

Bleeding After Essure Procedure

A Texas woman said her experience with Essure was fine until two years post-insertion. Her periods were like clockwork every 28 days and would last from six to eight days. Starting in December 2011, her period began as normal, but did not stop for 10 weeks.

At that time, it stopped for four days, but then she would bleed again for a month. In hindsight, she wishes she would have opted for a tubal ligation instead of the Essure implant.

Another patient experienced a full month of heavy bleeding after Essure procedure, but then did not have a period for seven months. She was so afraid she was pregnant – or going to get pregnant – that she started receiving Depo Provera injections as an additional birth control method.

A nurse from North Dakota says she has had debilitating periods ever since receiving Essure in 2013. She experiences heavy bleeding, severe headaches, pain in her pelvis, vaginal walls, down her legs all the way to the bottom of her feet during her menstrual cycle.

When not on her period, she says sex is always painful and her pelvic area always feels tender.

An Ohio woman who received Essure in 2011 had to stay on the birth control pill for five years because her tubes would not create enough scar tissue to completely close. Now, one of the Essure coils has moved and is poking into her endometrium, causing her to bleed and pass blood clots.

This incidence of bleeding after the Essure procedure had led to her needing a complete hysterectomy at the age of 37.

Bayer now owns and markets Essure, which was originally created by the now-defunct Conceptus company.

FDA Adverse Events Reports

The FDA reported 5,093 adverse event reports from November 2002 through May 2015. They report a “dramatic increase” in adverse events that have been reported in the last two years.

The agency also found 20,000 complaints made by women through Facebook and Twitter accounts, reported ABC News.

Consumer activist Erin Brockovich has taken on Essure through a website that allows women to share their stories and to sign a petition to remove the product from the market.

If you have received this implanted birth control and experienced bleeding after the Essure procedure, you could be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit.

In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
