An Illinois woman filed a Composix mesh lawsuit against Davol Inc., alleging the company’s hernia mesh caused her serious injuries due to device defects.
The plaintiff, Sherri M., says she was implanted with a Composix hernia mesh implant during surgery on Feb. 25, 2011. However, nearly six years after the device was first implanted, the mesh implant was removed in order to treat hernia recurrence.
During the removal surgery, the doctor allegedly found a number of dense adhesions, and further found that the mesh “had folded upon itself and the small bowel was exposed to the bare polypropylene.”
Sherri alleges in her Composix mesh lawsuit that these complications are the responsibility of Davol and Bard and that the manufacturer was responsible for device defects and failed to give adequate warning about its risks.
Sherri filed her Composix mesh lawsuit on Sept. 24, 2018, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern Division of the Southern District of Ohio. She filed this litigation on multiple counts, including manufacturing and design defect, failure to warn, and negligence, among others.
Sherri’s is far from the first lawsuit to be filed over hernia mesh complications. If you or someone you love has suffered from hernia mesh problems caused by the Composix device, you may be able to file a Composix mesh lawsuit.
Basics of Hernia Mesh
A hernia mesh device like the Composix implant is commonly used to reinforce problems caused by a hernia, like reinforcing a weak area or patching up a hole. The specific hernia mesh device named in this lawsuit is known as Composix mesh, manufactured by Davol Inc., a subsidiary of C.R. Bard.
Although the Composix device and other hernia mesh implants are widely used, more and more patients who have been implanted with these devices are coming forward with their own reports of serious problems associated with the implants.
Bard is not the only manufacturer that makes hernia mesh devices. Ethicon and others also make similar devices.
Complications Linked with Hernia Mesh Implants
Hernia mesh devices have been linked with a slew of serious side effects, which include hernia recurrence, rejection of the device, infection, chronic pain, migration of the device, inflammation, and tissue and nerve damage. If a device moves out of place, patients may face an even more serious risk of problems like infection, adhesions, or device failure. For some patients, it may be several years before their hernia mesh device starts causing problems and they develop symptoms.
In some cases, patients have to undergo hernia mesh removal in order to alleviate their complications. Additional surgery, however, exposes patients to further risks, including infection and other side effects. Revision surgery also adds to a patient’s medical expenses.
Can You File a Composix Mesh Lawsuit?
If you or a loved one has experienced side effects caused by a Composix hernia mesh device, you may be able to pursue a Composix mesh lawsuit. Filing a lawsuit cannot undo injuries caused by the side effects of hernia mesh, but it can help to compensate for the financial effects of medical expenses and lost wages.
The Composix Mesh Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-01103-EAS-KAJ, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern Division of the Southern District of Ohio.
