Vita Coco Coconut Water Class Action Lawsuit
By Sarah Pierce
The makers of Vita Coco coconut water have been hit with a $5 million class action lawsuit last week over allegations that their “super-hydrating” beverages aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.
According to the Vita Coco class action lawsuit, All Market, Inc. falsely advertises that its coconut water beverages contain “15 times the electrolytes found in sports drinks.” The class action lawsuit, however, cites a recent study by ConsumerLab.com that found some Vita Coco flavors had “significantly less” sodium and magnesium than advertised.
The Vita Coco class action lawsuit claims to have a “confidential witness” that says All Market “knew or should have known of this discrepancy for years.” The witness says he or she was “specifically told that the packaging used and preservatives in Vita Coco products degrade the nutritional contents,” the lawsuit says.
The Vita Coco class action lawsuit charges All-Market with deceptive trade practices, false advertising and fraud. It is filed on behalf of anyone who has purchased Vita Coco since 2007.
