Recent studies have Viagra users concerned about the risks of developing Viagra skin cancer, or melanoma. Users of Cialis and Levitra may have similar melanoma skin cancer risks.
Viagra Study
One Viagra study published in April in JAMA Internal Medicine found that men who used Viagra had a significantly higher risk of developing Viagra skin cancer. It was suggested that there was as much as an 84 percent increase of melanoma skin cancer in Viagra users.
It was also suggested that Cialis and Levitra have higher Viagra skin cancer risks because they last longer in the body.
Over 25,000 men were examined by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health. Data was taken over a period of 10 years. More than 3,000 cases of skin cancer were found in Viagra users.
While most were squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma, a small percentage developed melanoma skin cancer, the most dangerous kind of skin cancer. Melanoma makes up less than 2 percent of skin cancer cases, but nearly 10,000 people have been expected to die from it this year.
This Viagra study was not 100 percent conclusive. It was ultimately agreed upon that more research was needed before talks of Viagra recalls began.
However, Dr. Abrar Qureshi, co-author of the study, suggested that “people who are on the medication and who have a high risk for developing melanoma may consider touching base with their primary care providers.”
It was also noted that erectile dysfunction does not cause melanoma skin cancer.
Viagra Skin Cancer
The “little blue pill” has been used to treat erectile dysfunction for years. Once it became U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved in 1998, the Pfizer pill became the most popular treatment for erectile dysfunction. It was estimated that over 23 million men have used Viagra since 1998, suggesting that millions may be at risk of developing Viagra skin cancer.
Since then, new erectile dysfunction drugs have been introduced to the market. This, when combined with alleged Viagra skin cancer risks, may cause the drug manufacturer some trouble.
Viagra skin cancer may involve symptoms such as:
- Change in a mole’s appearance (shape, color, or size)
- Oozing or bleeding from a mole
- Change in a mole’s texture (itchiness, hardness, bumps, swelling, etc)
Other factors such as exposure to ultraviolet light and family history/DNA may be factors in developing melanoma. However, the study claimed they accounted for those external factors before publishing their study on Viagra skin cancer.
While the JAMA study was not definite, it encouraged additional discussion about potential Viagra skin cancer risks. More studies are needed in order for the exact risks to be known.
Men may choose to file Viagra skin cancer lawsuits against Pfizer. Cialis and Levitra skin cancer victims may also choose to file lawsuits against their respective drug manufacturers. A Viagra skin cancer class action lawsuit investigation is currently underway.
