cancer de pielDiscussion continues over a recent study that showed a possible connections between Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs and melanoma skin cancer. The Viagra melanoma study was unable to definitely prove that Viagra caused the dangerous skin cancer, but the associations were strong enough for many to call for further study.

The Viagra melanoma study examined data from over 25,000 men. Participants were originally questioned in 2000, with researchers following up 10 years later. While over 3,000 men developed squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma (the two most common forms of skin cancer), their cases were not caused by Viagra use. However, 142 melanoma skin cancer cases were believed to be caused by Viagra. This was above the normal rate.

The researchers wrote that Viagra “may be associated with an increased risk of developing melanoma. Although this study is insufficient to alter clinical recommendations, we support a need for continued investigation of this association.”

The Viagra melanoma study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The data suggested that Viagra could possibly more than double the risk of developing melanoma.

Many have agreed with the researchers and stated that additional research is recommended and required before adding warnings or recalling any drug. Some have stated that the Viagra melanoma study was insignificant and no cause for alarm.

However, it has also been suggested that a melanoma screening before a Viagra prescription would not be harmful and may lessen the danger of Viagra skin cancer.

Viagra and Melanoma

Viagra is a PDE5A inhibitor which reportedly “increases the invasiveness of melanoma cells,” according to the Viagra melanoma study abstract. The drug has been used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension in millions of men. Yet many men have allegedly developed Viagra melanoma skin cancer.

It has been suggested that other erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Cialis and Levitra, might even have a higher risk because they remain in the body for a longer period of time. Because these drugs were not on the market when the study began, these allegations have not been confirmed.

Melanoma is the rarest form of skin cancer, only comprising 2 percent of all skin cancer cases. However, it is the most deadly form of skin cancer.

Melanoma often appears as an unusual mole on the skin. Signs of melanoma include a mole that has an abnormal, uneven shape, multiple colors, or has grown. Medications like Viagra may cause melanoma, but UV ray exposure and genetic history also play a part. These other factors were taken into consideration during the Viagra melanoma study.

Many men have filed a Viagra melanoma lawsuit as a result of the alleged Viagra side effects. Plaintiffs may win compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of wages, and more. The manufacturers of erectile dysfunction drugs are currently the subject of a melanoma skin cancer class action lawsuit investigation.
