A United States Navy veteran filed an asbestos disease lawsuit, alleging he developed long term health complications from regularly working with asbestos products. These asbestos products were reportedly manufactured by Abb Inc. and Foster Wheeler Energy Corporation, which are named as defendants in the asbestos disease lawsuit.
Plaintiff Brian H. alleges these asbestos products directly contributed to his mesothelioma diagnosis, which is a rare form of lung cancer that is specifically caused by asbestos exposure.
According to the asbestos disease lawsuit, Brian had worked with these asbestos products throughout the course of his working career, which were produced, manufactured, and installed by the defendant companies. Brian says he worked in various locations in the states of California and Kentucky, along with the South China sea including:
- The Hesco Parts Corporation in Louisville, Ky. as a laborer from 1961 to 1963
- The USS McKean, DD-784 in Long Beach, Calif. as an Electrician’s Mate from 1964 to 1967
- Seventh Fleet in South China Sea as an Electrician’s Mate from 1964 to 1967
- Mare Island Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif. as a Duty Electrician from 1964 to 1967
- U.S. Naval Reserves in Long Beach, Calif. from 1973 to 1988
During each of these work periods, Brian says he regularly worked with asbestos products while allegedly being unaware of the potential health complications.
Brian says he was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma on Dec. 14, 2017, which is a disease specifically caused by asbestos exposure. Brian has since been contending with the disease, and will most likely have to undergo a series of expensive medical treatments to prolong his life.
Brian has since learned that his disease was allegedly caused by the asbestos products, which spurred him to file legal action against the manufacturing companies.
Overview of Asbestos Mesothelioma Correlation
Mesothelioma is a specific form of lung cancer, which is caused by asbestos fibers becoming entrapped in the mucus lining of the lungs. In contrast, asbestos lung cancer develops directly in the lungs where the asbestos fibers have festered.
Asbestos is a fibrous material that was popularly used for a variety of manufacturing and insulation purposes, for its fire and chemical resistant qualities. In addition to these qualities, asbestos was also cheap to use and was an ideal choice for a number of building companies and even the United States Navy when building ships.
Due to the United States Navy using asbestos in a number of their ships, numerous veterans and machine workers had regularly experienced asbestos exposure. Asbestos fibers can either be inhaled or swallowed and can take up to 50 years before festering. For this reason, mesothelioma is often diagnosed in latent stages and give little treatment options for patients.
Recently former laborers and veterans have filed legal action against manufacturing companies, for producing and installing asbestos products and not disclosing this information to the public. The federal government requires companies to provide protective equipment to workers when working with asbestos products, or at the very least include warnings on the products’ labels.
