pradaxa-bleeding-tubeBoehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals reportedly paid Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuit settlements to over 3,000 plaintiffs. Plaintiffs alleged that the drug manufacturer failed to warn that Pradaxa could cause uncontrollable internal bleeding because there is no Pradaxa antidote.

Over 3,000 plaintiffs were involved in a Pradaxa internal bleeding multidistrict litigation and have already received settlement payments as of April 28, according to documents from a case management conference. This is the same proposed settlement that was announced in May 2014.

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals agreed to pay $650 million to more than 4,000 individuals who suffered from severe Pradaxa complications. Currently, 1,624 Pradaxa bleeding lawsuits are still pending.

For the remaining plaintiffs, a status conference has been scheduled for June 9. It is anticipated that the settlement payments will continue so that all victims of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical’s alleged negligence could receive financial awards.

While these Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuits have been settled, there are still many more that have not been processed.

Pradaxa Internal Bleeding

Pradaxa is an anticoagulant that is intended to prevent stroke in patients undergoing knee surgery and in other conditions. It was designed as a replacement to warfarin, the previously leading anticoagulant that has been used for decades.

The problem with warfarin is that it required the patients to drastically change their diet and required strict blood monitoring. Pradaxa was marketed as easier to use with less impact on day-to-day life.

Both warfarin and Pradaxa led to internal bleeding cases. However, there is an antidote for warfarin should bleeding occur.

The lack of a Pradaxa antidote makes using the drug considerably more dangerous. Thousands of individuals have claimed that the drug caused uncontrollable Pradaxa internal bleeding and similar Pradaxa complications.

The primary treatment option is to undergo a blood transfusion as quickly as possible. Many patients have died from Pradaxa complications.

As a result of these side effects, thousands of individuals have filed Pradaxa lawsuits against the drug manufacturer. Many of these have been consolidated in multidistrict litigation (MDL) to help the legal proceedings run more smoothly and quickly.

Allegations include that Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals was aware, or should have been aware, of Pradaxa internal bleeding and the lack of a Pradaxa antidote, and failed to warn against the dangers. While work on an antidote is ongoing, thousands of individuals have allegedly suffered injuries.

Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuit settlements may help an individual or family pay for medical expenses, loss of earnings, pain and suffering, and more.

In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
