Across the country, thousands of women have reported that they have been injured by Essure, a permanent birth control device.
Essure is a medical device that has been promoted as a non-surgical option for women who desire permanent sterilization. It has been marketed as a safe and noninvasive alternative to the traditional tubal ligation surgery that many women undergo when they no longer wish to become pregnant.
The Essure device is implanted during a physician’s office visit and women return home with no surgery recovery downtime or restrictions that a tubal ligation surgery would place. A doctor inserts the small device into the woman’s fallopian tubes in a short office procedure.
The device itself consists of two small metal coils. Once these coils are placed in the woman’s fallopian tubes, an inflammatory response causes scar tissue to form around the coils. Over time, approximately in about three months, enough scar tissue grows to completely block the fallopian tubes.
It is in this manner that pregnancy prevented because the woman does not release eggs past the blockage of the Essure coils, and sperm cannot meet with the egg to fertilize it and produce a baby.
Many women jumped at the chance to avoid an invasive surgery and meet their need for a permanent sterilization once they have decided they no longer wanted to have children in their future.
Unfortunately, for some women, they became injured by Essure and suffered a number of serious side effects from the medical device’s use.
Complications reported by women injured by Essure include but are not limited to:
- Severe headache and migraine
- Autoimmune disorders
- Device breakage
- Severe pain in the pelvic region
- Device migration beyond the fallopian tubes
- Metal allergies
- Hormonal issues
- Heavy bleeding
- Abnormal menstrual periods
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Unintended pregnancy
- Stillborn birth
Women who have been injured by Essure have thought that they can have the device removed and rid themselves of the unwanted side effects and complications they experienced. However, Essure removal is a whole other problem in and of itself.
As the device was intended to be permanent, finding a doctor who will agree to remove the device and who has experience doing so is very difficult for most women. There are only a handful of doctors across the United States that have agreed to remove the device.
Many of the women who have their Essure device removed need to have a partial or full hysterectomy in order to fully rid themselves of the device. This, however, brings on a whole new set of problems, causing many younger women to enter into early menopause. This leads to hormonal and balances and may put women at greater risk for cancer.
