A corn farming class action lawsuit was recently filed against Syngenta Seeds Inc.

The lawsuit alleges that Syngenta caused significant damages to U.S. corn farmers by refusing to wait for major U.S. export partners to approve new biotech traits implanted in their genetically modified corn seed.

According to the Syngenta GMO corn lawsuit, Syngenta acted wrongfully because the risk of its actions were placed on U.S. corn farmers rather than the seed company marketers and distributers.

The Syngenta corn class action lawsuit was filed by Plaintiff Peter Anderson of Colorado on his own behalf and on behalf of persons similarly situated.

According to the Syngenta class action lawsuit, Syngenta began manufacturing and marketing a seed called Viptera in 2011. The seed company allegedly claimed that Viptera increased yields due to insect resistance. However, Syngenta allegedly began selling the seed to corn farmers before major U.S. export countries had approved the genetic modification.

The Syngenta class action lawsuit alleges that Viptera corn eventually contaminated the U.S. corn supply and in 2014 China discovered Viptera corn in their shipments and rejected hundreds of millions of bushels of U.S. corn.

The GMO corn seed class action lawsuit goes on to allege that despite this information, Syngenta introduced a second genetically modified seed into the U.S. corn market in 2014 without having the approval of many major U.S. export countries.

Anderson has been a corn farmer for several years. According to the Syngenta class action lawsuit, Anderson has never bought or knowingly planted Viptera or Duracade corn seeds but he has suffered financial damages due to China’s refusal to accept corn exported from the United States.

According to the Syngenta class action lawsuit, the United States is the largest producer and exporter of corn worldwide. Over 13 billion bushels of corn are grown in the U.S. each year. This accounts for 35 percent of the corn grown annually worldwide. Anderson alleges that in 2011 and 2012 U.S. corn crops generated nearly $18 billion in revenue.

According to the Syngenta class action lawsuit, China is a major purchaser of U.S. corn. In the 2011-2012 China purchased approximately 203 million bushels of U.S. corn.

The corn farming class action lawsuit asserts that the loss of China from the U.S. corn market cost corn farmers a significant amount of money. China has historically been resistant to genetically modified food products.
