General Electric Company and other manufacturing companies are facing a recently filed wrongful death claim from a man alleging his wife developed lung cancer from asbestos and later died from the disease.
The woman had allegedly developed lung cancer from asbestos exposure, which was a regular occurrence due to her long term employment at Motor Coils Manufacturing Company.
Plaintiff Martin S. is filing this asbestos lung cancer lawsuit on behalf of the estate of his late wife Diane S., who allegedly died of lung cancer from asbestos exposure. Martin alleges Diane had been exposed to asbestos on a regular basis while working for Motor Coils Manufacturing Company, also named as a defendant in the wrongful death lawsuit.
According to the complaint, Diane had worked at this company in Pennsylvania between 1990 to 1996, which was one of several of her occupations in the manufacturing industry.
Asbestos in the Workplace
Asbestos was common in the manufacturing and industrial industry before the 1980s for its wide range of uses and its fire and chemical resistant qualities.
In addition, asbestos was also a cheap material to use for manufacturers and was utilized in nearly every aspect of life in the United States. Asbestos reached its peak in popularity during World War II, when it was implemented into a number of United States Navy ships for insulation purposes.
Throughout the 1970s and ’80s, however, the federal government enacted regulations that significantly restricted uses of asbestos.
Overview of Asbestos Lung Cancer Complications
In addition to Diane, Martin says he also suffered regular asbestos exposure during his employment at the same company, Motor Coils Manufacturing, between 1973 and 2000. Furthermore, Martin and Diane were allegedly exposed to asbestos during his time of doing car repair work during the 1970s and 1980s. Due to this regular exposure, Martin says he was and may still be at risk of developing lung cancer from asbestos.
Over these years, Diane and Martin were allegedly unaware of the serious health consequences of breathing in this fibrous material including the risk of lung cancer from asbestos. During this time, Martin says he and Diane were not instructed to take any safety precautions and were not given any protective equipment by their employers.
When asbestos is either inhaled or swallowed, the fibers can become lodged in the lungs or stomach. Once the fibers become embedded, they can stay dormant for a number of years before festering. For cases of lung cancer from asbestos, the disease can take up to 35 years to show any symptoms. This often results in latent diagnosis and limited treatment options, as well as a shortened life expectancy.
According to the wrongful death claim, Diane was diagnosed with lung cancer on May 15, 2014, and ultimately died from the disease less than a year later on Feb. 14, 2015.
Martin is filing this asbestos lung cancer lawsuit against General Electric Company and other manufacturers, for allegedly failing to protect him and Diane from asbestos exposure. Martin is seeking multiple counts of damage in his asbestos lung cancer lawsuit, including negligence and wrongful death.
