A mother has reached a confidential settlement with Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands over allegations that a Crock-Pot electric pressure cooker exploded and severely burned her young daughter.
Plaintiff Lacey Hall filed the Sunbeam lawsuit on behalf of her daughter, who was a minor when the alleged incident occurred.
According to a Law 360 report, Hall was using the pressure cooker to prepare food in October 2019 when the device allegedly exploded without warning. Hall alleges the pressure cooker’s lid detached, allowing scalding hot contents to escape and land on her daughter.
The lawsuit accused Sunbeam and its parent company, Newell Brands, of continuing to sell allegedly defective Crock-Pot electric pressure cookers without adequately warning consumers about an allegedly faulty lid-locking mechanism.
Because the Sunbeam pressure cooker settlement involves a minor, Hall asked a Florida federal judge to approve the confidential agreement and authorize the disbursement of settlement funds.
Hall’s lawsuit was one of three cases filed against Sunbeam and Newell Brands involving allegations concerning Crock-Pot electric pressure cookers. The cases were later consolidated in federal court, but there is no indication whether the other plaintiffs also reached settlements with the companies.
Sunbeam pressure cooker settlement requires court approval
According to Hall’s motion, the settlement was reached during the trial after the case had been extensively litigated. The financial terms of the agreement are confidential and are not disclosed in the motion seeking approval.
The court appointed attorney Kenneth J. Bush as a guardian ad litem for Hall’s daughter in June 2026. The guardian ad litem reviewed the circumstances of the case, including Hall’s complaint, a lien letter, trial testimony, litigation costs and the proposed settlement release.
Bush also spoke with Hall about her representation and reviewed how the settlement funds would be allocated for the minor child, as reported by Law360.
After reviewing the materials, the guardian ad litem determined that the confidential settlement and proposed disbursement of the funds were fair, reasonable and in the minor child’s best interests, according to the motion.
Hall’s motion asks the court to approve the settlement, authorize payment of attorneys’ fees and reimbursement of costs and allow Hall, as her daughter’s parent and legal guardian, to execute documents necessary to complete the agreement. The motion states that the defendants do not oppose the requested relief.
Meanwhile, Sunbeam has recalled more than 1.29 million Oster French Door Countertop Ovens over a defect that can cause the doors to close unexpectedly, posing a burn risk.
