The manufacturers of Suave Keratin Infusion have reached a $10.2 million class action settlement with consumers over allegations that their product damaged consumers’ hair and scalps.

The Suave Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit is accused of corroding hair and causing chemical burns to the scalp. Consumers have reported losing their hair and suffering damaged skin on their heads. Hundreds of consumers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the safety and outcome of these products through social media sites including Facebook and Twitter. Facebook pages decrying the product feature picture of chemical burns and missing tufts of hair, allegedly caused by the Suave Keratin Infusion Kit.

A class action lawsuit was filed in August 2012 in order to seek compensation for injuries from the kit. The case was recently settled, but a new Suave Keratin class action lawsuit is in the works.

The Suave Keratin Infusion class action lawsuit makes several allegations about the product. The smoothing kit was marketed as a way to make hair smoother and shinier. However, the class action lawsuit alleges that it instead burned hair and skin. In addition to allegations that the product was unsafe, the class action alleged that it was falsely advertised as being free of formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde is an organic compound which can be very dangerous under certain circumstances. Formaldehyde is both corrosive, strongly scented, and a known carcinogen — that is a substance that can cause cancer. The Suave Keratin class action lawsuit held that the product’s manufacturers had an obligation to recall the product, an obligation they failed to live up to.

Under the Suave Keratin class action settlement, consumers who used the product are entitled to either a one-time payment of $10 and/or the reimbursement for the cost of treating their injuries. An additional class action lawsuit investigation is underway to pursue additional compensation.

The class action settlement is for the case Sidney Reid, et al. v. Unilever United States Inc., et al., Case No. 1:12-cv-06058, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

If you used the Keratin Infusion Kit and suffered from damage to your hair or scalp, you may be entitled to compensation. But you may need to act quickly to ensure that your rights are upheld.
